Is this the real “Arab street”? Somehow, I think so.
Beirut used to be a wonderful, cosmopolitan city, before all the troubles. Funny, too, how all those bleating about the US occupation of Iraq are curiously silent when asked about the Syrian occupation of Lebanon.
I submit that, if the Syrians leave Lebanon soon (a consummation devoutly to be wished), no small part of the reason will have been the infant democracy building in Iraq as a direct result of that US occupation.

The problem is (or one problem) those same people you see in the street will run and hide at the first resistance or aggression from Syria or the resident terrorists.
They might not if they had a different mindset. Which is what I see you are hoping for along with the rest of us.
But, they would resent and most likely fight the US or France if we decided to invade to rescue them from themselves and what ever other forces were there.
Which are many. Many terrorist groups, many different tribal and political groups, that can’t agree on hardly anything at any one time.
Read this essay , it opened my eyes into the Arab Islamic mindset.
