Oh, to have been a fly on the Bush-Musharraf wall — 10 Comments

  1. In his country, he probably has to walk a pretty thin line. It would probably sit better with his excitable constituents if they thought he had been coerced into action. I don’t really care if he was threatened or not. It’s a rough world and it takes rough action to preserve our interests.

  2. A few years back, India and Pakistan were perched on the edge of thermonuclear war. And then, suddenly, they were not.

    How did that happen?

Who talked sense into them? Who would have had the power to scare them both straight?

Bush did not say Pakistan wasn’t threatened. He said, “I guess I was taken aback by the harshness of the words.”

That is not a denial. It sounds like a dodge.

In my opinion, if we explicitly threatened Pakistan over its belligerence towards India, then it was perfectly appropriate. And, really, none of us know exactly what was going on behind the scenes in the days after 9/11, so we wouldn’t know whether it would have been appropriate to threaten Pakistan then.
