Some of you may not know that I have followed the romantic entanglements of Salman Rushdie (now Sir Salman) with alacrity, especially his recent marriage to Padma Lakshmi.
Here’s my first effort on that score, complete with photo of Rushdie and Lakshmi. I’ll reproduce the photo here for those too lazy to click on the link:
And here is my second effort, an explanation about the attraction between the two. The union was based, apparently, on mirth (read the post to understand what I’m talking about).
But now the sad news has come that this storybook romance is over. Yes folks, although it may seem difficult to believe, Rushdie and Lakshmi have split.
It appears that Lakshmi initiated the breakup, although she’s keeping mum on her reasons. So we can only speculate as to whatever they might be. And for those Lakshmi fans among you (and you know who you are), here’s her website. Clink on “photos” for more of Lakshmi unveiled; the lady is not shy. Or you can order her brand new cookbook, Tangy, Tart, Hot, and Sweet. Hmmm.
But don’t cry for Sir Salman. On a serious note, he’s been through much harder times than this and survived.

Very funny. I read about this earlier in the week. What an odd bunch?

Poor Salman. He checks out of the House of Mirth and into the Heartbreak Hotel. While it lasted, Padma must have taken his mind off the fatwa.

If she liked faun and games, then perhaps Rushdie’s latest public attention was too much her, Neo?
Certainly there have been women bloggers that couldn’t take the pressure of death threats, even though they handled it in a magnificent legal fashion, so they dropped out of blogging and public appearances.
Perhaps Padma believes that Rushdie is going into too much of the Islamic Jihad spotlight?

I thought it’s an old news.
About half-a-year ago, I think, there was something in the usual gossip blogs, about her “going her own way”, what with the books, the show (TV, I believe? can’t remember for sure).
Ymar, she got married to him while the official death sentence been in action for a long time.
I wondered why it lasted so long, actually.
Woman like Padma are not defined by the man on their elbow. Rather vice-versa.

‘…she got married to him while the official death sentence been in action for a long time.”
But she left him after his “knighthood” refocused attention onto him, and calls for greater effort to implement said long-standing “official” death sentence.

Ymar, she got married to him while the official death sentence been in action for a long time.
Reports have it that Rushdie has been coming out of the shadows lately. There’s a difference between sentence without attempts to enforce it and a sentence with lots of people trying to enforce it publicly.

Shoot! I had been practicing my mirth all during this last year. My hopes of deploying exceptional mirth upon beautiful women are now crushed…
Maybe, instead of aiming to become married, then live happily ever after, I should shoot for brief, mirth-filled romantic affairs… Darn the luck. That shall be so unsatifying…

Had to have been the sports car. It was the sports car wasnt it? Its in the pre-nup isnt it? I just know it is.

Mirth is good, but doesn’t fully compensate for a lack of girth, for whatever it’s worth…

I look forward to seeing Wife #5. It looks like Salman’s not waiting for the afterlife to accumulate his 72 raisenettes.

If you’re ever watched Top Chef, it’s pretty obvious Rushdie was in this one solely for her looks as a trophy wife. The woman has zero personality.

I am always a bit mournful whenever I hear of a marriage that has died. My condolences go out to all concerned and to all who have ever lost a marriage.
From what Bob says, it can be inferred that Lakshmi married him solely for his personality as a trophy husband. The man has zero looks.

Wooo, she is a gorgeous woman.

Rumors running rampant within the expat Indian community in NYC, has Padma marrying Salman to use him as a stepping stone in her career. And now thatshe has her own show, her book is being published by a major publisher, she has no need for him.
BTW, I wonder if anyone has seen her with make-up? She is actually rather plain looking, does not have an athletic build, is knock-kneed. Wonder why people think she is so hot?
July 10th, 2007 at 10:41 am
Ronin: I assume you mean without makeup.
People think she’s so hot because with makeup (and especially in photos), she is.
Those expats may have a good point. But whatever her motives, I bet Salman had a couple of good years.
