I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving. Here’s some corny American pictorial propaganda in honor of the occasion, one of my favorite holidays:
This painting was not originally done for the holiday. It was part of Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” series of 1941. Inspired by a post-Pearl Harbor speech of FDR’s about the war effort and why we were fighting, and designed to help sell war bonds, this particular one illustrated “Freedom from Want.”
So on this Thanksgiving Day I’ll reiterate the sentiment: may we all have freedom—of religion, of speech; from want, from fear.

Hello Neo. I’ve just come across your site. The ‘point’ of your blog is interesting/funny – still getting a feel for it. The ‘look’ is great. Happy Thanksgiving! I remember Thanksgiving very well from my days in grad school. It’s a wonderful holiday, and super important to you guys, I know. Sometimes I felt Thanksgiving was more important there than Christmas. I don’t mean this sacriligiously. For the religious Xmas is NB, no doubt; and for the non-religious it’s an NB family day. But for Americans-as-Americans, Thanksgiving is the bees knees, as it were. Enjoy!

There is nothing corny about Norman Rockwell! It was only on the coasts, I think, that they looked down on him for respecting Middle America and everything it stands for.
Happy Thanksgiving, Neo. Thank you for a year’s worth of strong wisdom.

It is true that the typical American life didn’t look like a Rockwell painting, but it was probably closer than most want to admit. I believe that America has been blessed more than any nation in history. After all, though we may not be the melting pot some claim, we are the “hybred nation” of the smartest, toughest, and most resilent people ever known on earth! Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, as well. I don’t know about all, but even in my sometimes sorry states, I know I have a lot, most of which I give thanks for and wisely, some things I take for granted. Such is largess even in seeming middle class realities, no? For the ability to take some things for granted, I must give thanks as well. May you be well, be full, be loved, and be thankful on this day.

“Freedom From Want” has always struck me as the sore thumb among these, seemingly more reflective of Continental attitudes than characteristically American ones. Why not make it “freedom to produce”? In any case, I’m certainly grateful for the freedom and consequent abundance that I have the great good fortune to enjoy as an American. For those I thank my countrymen and women, and our founding generations perhaps most of all. Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all!

How do they consistently manage to make the cranberries conform to the exact size, shape and contours of the can they put them in? This has always managed to amaze me.
