I’m borrowing this valentine… — 19 Comments

  1. Obama = Hope!!

    Save Darfur…….

    free tibet…..

    …adherence to principal is extremism…

Oops, how did that get there?

  2. I’m way too old for modern politics. I identify completely with the oldster in the valentine card–but my association is in a different venue. I think of the candy-colored clown, that sandman, who bids us sleep and dream of what can never be.

I’d like to see Obama win. He’s everything I hate in a politician–full of sound and fury and . . . . An empty suit. But I’ve never believed that the people in this country were, in the majority, racists and bigots. I’d love to see a black female Indian transvestite be elected president just so we could get beyond all the liberal political crap. But, in order to be a successful politician, you have to be missing some of the basic parts necessary to be fully human. So finding anyone normal you’d like to see elected is hard enough. When you start adding racial, ethnic, and sexual criteria to the pot, the only outcome is Rainbow Stew. Which you might find people eating on a blog list that likes sonnets. However, for those going to vote for McCain, the Villanelle is the required form. Forget Henley; Dylan Thomas (Do Not Go Gentle) and William Empson (Missing Dates) are the exemplars.

  3. I think of the candy-colored clown, that sandman, who bids us sleep and dream of what can never be.

    Good one.

    Dr Savage, is that you?

The Savage Show is one of my secret sins–I know I ‘shouldn’t’ like it, but it’s as though he’s talking right to me….

  4. As bad as I see the Republicans right now I see the Dems as worse off. I don’t necessarily mean in terms of electability (that is more based on people who *aren’t* part of party politics and I can’t say until the Dems decide their candidate) but as to how the party is shaping up.

As of right now the Dems are in a hard place. Hillary can win if she pulls all the punches – that is use the super delegates and bring in Florida and Michigan (where Obama wasn’t on the ticket and couldn’t win). We all are pretty sure that Hillary will try it but until done can’t be sure.

We currently see that many Obama supporters aren’t just supporters but they move into Obama as a religious Icon. It’s not hard to see the same faces looking up at him that are one those Christian Rock commercials or other televangelists. If Hilary “steals” the election how are they going to react (even though that was the system in place beforehand)?

So, what happens when those two collide and the aftermath? Dunno – but I suspect that McCain – even with as much dislike as the conservatives (and myself) have for him will not be anywhere near what is going to occur with the Dems if Hillary gets it.

Once Obama has to go past the platitudes he will be trounced by McCain – all those ideas of “not much difference” will be squashed hard. This cartoon pretty much sums Obama up in a VERY few words.

For once the Dems have put themselves in an almost no win situation. Their main hope now is that McCain really screws everything up (they got it in the 90’s with Dole, so I can’t exactly discount it – and McCain is VERY much capable of doing even worse).

  5. Fantastic cartoon — but I actually don’t think quite so accurate (much as I would like it to be so). OK, maybe his speeches are empty, but his website is full of policy wonk-friendliness.

I went to his site, and began reading his economic stuff. Lots of Tax Credits — which is the optimal small change adjustment to encourage “better” behavior at the Taxpayer level.

If he can win the Dem nomination without getting too specific, that allows him to copy whatever he wants from Hillary, or whoever, to fill out even more substance in debates with McCain. I’d guess on policy, except for Iraq, there’s little difference between the two.

And, even on Iraq, all he’ll need is a “new” intelligence estimate that Iran will have a nuke in 20 months or so, and he can fudge his quick withdrawal from Iraq promises.

I do fear his coming election due to continued Culture War on abortion — the pro-life folk need to get anti-Roe justices to correct the 1973 mistaken judicial “Abortion Amendment”.

  6. I grew up in Cook County Illinois (Obama’s turf) and the fact that no one in the MSM seems to pick up that Obama is a Democratic machine placeholder. Cook county/Chicago in both parties is one of the last remaining machine strongholds. Mayor Daley (son) is truely running in the efficient but corrupt mode of his father.

Joe Bidens unfortunate choice of words describing Obama as a “clean, articulate” man fits the classic political placeholder well. Obama has held no executive positions in government or the private sector and had no strongly contested election contests. That he is a strong favorite for the Dem nomination is truely astounding.

There are very smart people who know this yet still hope he would grow in office to compensate for this lack of experience. Perhaps a stint as Governor or as a cabinet officer might be safer for the nation?

  7. So let me guess how this works.

The people who are skeptical about getting on the hope float (re: people who don’t support his political program) will have to be made into bad people (conservatives… against change).

Also, if his political program passes, it won’t change anything. Political programs hardly ever do. He will have a ready made out group to blame for its failure… those greedy evil conservatives.

How is this not just old time left wing politics? It’s just that with the cycle starting fresh. How much time will it take to descend into being ugly? Even if Obama doesn’t lead the charge, his disappointed followers will have no where else to go but the old time scapegoating. It’s soooo not a change….

  8. neo, Great cartoon!!!

DuMaurier-Smith, >But I’ve never believed that the people in this country were, in the majority, racists and bigots. I’d love to see a black female Indian transvestite be elected president just so we could get beyond all the liberal political crap.

  9. PS I was laughing about your quote DS, it didn’t print out for some reason. That was a good one! heh

  10. Seeing George W. Bush supporters call someone as substantive as Barack Obama an ’empty suit’ is so hilarious that it fills me with more than just a belly full of laughs. It fills me with… hope. You can try to minimize, mock, discount and smirk all the supporters away, but in the end it will just make you look, and feel, ever so small. Because you didn’t dare drop your ideological armor when the opportunity for renewal came.

A lifetime of hard skepticism of politics for me has given way to real hope, not because I believe in magic, but because for once a genuinely thoughtful and decent candidate has a shot at the top spot.

Cynicism is a sad kind of wisdom. –Barack Obama

  11. Wow, barf, I can FEEL the healing … Yeah, Obama’s gonna RENEW us all, hope, change, unity … Right.

Let’s be clear, if Obama’s gonna HEAL this country, he’s gonna bring you and those you barf at together so you can work out your differences and we can be one nation again. Somehow.

He’s going to withdraw all combat troops from Iraq and institute universal healthcare, two of the most contentious issues we face, and that’s going to unite us. Somehow.

He’s going to regain the respect of the international community, and do it in a way that the half of the country that hates the UN doesn’t accuse him of betrayal. Somehow.

Right. Obama’s a great speaker, very charismatic. But he’s making promises NO ONE can fulfill.

  12. lumpenscholar, one question: as opposed to what? What is McCain promising to do? Does he even have a platform. other than scrabbling to prove that he’s the equal in ability to pander to a right-wing fringe that disproportionately affects policy choices in this country?

Obama promises me… that he will lead going forward in the same style that he has displayed his entire public life: judiciously, thoughtfully, pragmatically. Politics have gotten so far out of whack in this country that a corrective is sorely needed. A post-partisan corrective: if anyone can provide it, it is this candidate.

All the talk of false promises is just so obvious… people are afraid to try, since they might fail. Sometimes you just have to give the person with the best vision a chance to TRY.

WE HAVE TO TRY. In the case of a population of citizens, motivation IS results. Words ARE actions. One thing leads to the other.

Why can’t there be universal health care? The richest country in the world. Can’t ensure the welfare of its citizens.

Why can’t we withdraw from Iraq? It’s not our country. The strategic vision that informs a permanent occupation is so clearly a sham… the whole world knows it, 70% of Americans know it… why don’t you?
