A short history of Congress, Democrats, Republicans, Fannie, and Freddie — 4 Comments

  1. See the problem is that the democrats will deny this and spin it and it will be up to the McCain campaign to really do a job of education during the next 45 days to show the American people exactly what transpired. I have a lot of respect in many ways for President Bush. Just like his father he is a man of his word who I believe is compassionate at heart. However, neither of them was very good at explaining what they were trying to do and why they couldn’t get certain things through congress. Being able to do that was one of Reagan’s great strengths. He had no compunction about taking his case directly to the people. Even now the democratically controlled congress continues to do almost nothing and blocks everything else and only recently and rarely had the President publicly chastised them for it.

  2. I’ve read that Gingrich is saying McCain should oppose the bailout and can campaign that it is the Obama/Bush bailout plan. Seems like an interesting idea to me. I’m not convinced we need the bailout, although I do believe that things are serious. I sure didn’t see any of those record profits or golden parachutes so I don’t see why I should take the losses.

  3. Wonder if there is there a “little” pre-election hype going on here? One thing is for certain, the historical record now documents that dimocrats, particularly, clearly blocked early attempts at proactive regulation to address these problems. Why is the MSM obfuscating this truth?

From one of Larry Elder’s latest commentaries:

“According to the FDIC, in the almost two-year period of 2007 and 2008, 15 banks failed. Similarly, during Clinton’s last two years in office, 1999 and 2000, 15 banks also failed. In the recession-free years of 1988 and 1989, there were 1,004 bank failures. And since the Great Depression, the average number of yearly bank failures has been 94. “
