I was going to write about the Polanski arrest…
…but Kate Harding has saved me the trouble by writing essentially what I was thinking, and probably doing a better job of it than I would have.
I will add that the attitudes of those who would whitewash Polanski’s sorry crime and make excuses for him are not only wrong, but an example of the precipitous decline of what used to be known as Western Civilization.
A couple of legal points: it doesn’t matter what the victim wants at this point. It never does, except in the sentencing phase at the judge’s discretion, because one of the differences between civil and criminal law is that criminal acts are considered a crime against society as a whole.
There is also no proper legal sentence for a crime except the one handed out by the courts. “He’s suffered enough in other ways” is hogwash. If the court decides to take this into consideration and be lenient in the sentencing phase, fine. But that’s the court’s prerogative.
There are many sorts of judgments and many kinds of offenses. A victim can choose to forgive his/her perpetrator, but that’s on a personal level.
And a perpetrator can receive forgiveness from God, either in this life or the next; that’s between that person and the deity. But that’s divine law and divine justice. We happen to reside on earth, where justice is administered (albeit imperfectly) by our legal system. And that’s the system that Polanski had managed to evade for so long, and which may have finally caught up with him.
The wheels of justice grind slow, but they grind exceedingly fine.

Everybody may have a different Idea of what “safe schools” may mean, but I would imagine many people who would include pedophilia in a list of things that make schools safe, with the exception of President Obama’s safe schools Czar, Kevin Jennings.
A teacher was told by a 15-year-old high school sophomore that he was having homosexual sex with an “older man.” At the very least, statutory rape occurred. Fox News reported that the teacher violated a state law requiring that he report the abuse. That former teacher, Kevin Jennings, is President Obama’s “safe school czar.”

There was a similar case in Nashville of a child being raped, then murdered over thirty years ago which went unsolved until last year.

I believe my Uncle was speaking of truth bringing Spiritual Redemption and Freedom at the end, not freedom from jail.
I might add that the killer had told seven different versions of what happened, modifying things as the investigation proceeded…which was part of the reason my uncle was emphasizing truth.

When the media finally started picking up on the ACORN thing, I noticed they kept hiding the fact that the theoretical prostitutes were to be 13 years old.
I went over there and read some of the comments on the salon article. Man…is this country in trouble or what? Many of our fellow citizens are just plain nuts.

For what it’s worth, I feel bad that the victim’s request for dismissal of charges has over and over again been portrayed by Polanski sympathizers (and others) as somehow she doesn’t care anymore or is on his side, which is not the case.
According to Wikipedia (if you take it as a reliable source), the victim requested dismissal because “decades of publicity as well as the prosecutor’s focus on lurid details continues to traumatize her and her family.”
I don’t agree that charges should be dismissed, but it is upsetting to me how her position is being mischaracterized in the media.
Neo, I think you have explained the legal ramifications of this case very well. Polanski’s crime was a crime against society – at least the society that we inhabit.
He must be tried and, hopefully, found guilty. (Can there be any doubt of guilt?) Sentencing is the time for the judge to consider the punishment that is appropriate and consider matters of extenuation and mitigation.
I hope that he will face trial and punishment and that his case is handled by a truly wise judge.

If what I read is correct, Polanski did a little time behind bars in order to get a pre-sentencing report for the judge. He was released until the actual sentencing. That little taste (of Chino?) apparently soured Polanski on the whole doing time behind bars concept, especially considering how Chester’s are treated by fellow inmates.

I don’t think jail/prison sat too well with Polanski (no champaign and quaaludes), and that’s why he ran. But now that he’s suffered all these years, I guess we should forgive and forget, with a heavy accent on forgetting the guilty plea Polanski made when it came to his drugging and raping/sodomizing of a 13-year-old girl.

In Polanski’s case charges were brought on a timely basis. There was timely sworn testimony by the victim in court, a young girl. In 1977 Roman Polanski pled guilty and was convicted so there should be no doubt about Polanski’s guilt and little doubt about the accuracy about young victim’s testimony. Oh yes, Polanski was “demonized by the press”!
During the last decade numerous charges of sexual misconduct were brought against American Catholic clergy. The court testimony was almost always decades after the aledged crimes. It seems that maybe half of the belated charges brought to court in the last decade were false. Often the accused denied the charges and maintained their innocence. In no few instances where the accused was guilty, the accused had repented and went on to lived a life of dedicated service to the community. Half of the charges were likely true, however, in many cases the accused had died and evidence was stale. American Catholic clergy were relentlessly demonized by the media. I recall that the study conducted by John Jay College of Criminal Justice found that median age of the underage victims Catholic clergy sex abuse was 12. Polanski’s victim was 13. The John Jay College of Criminal Justice found that most of clergy sex abuse of minors occurred during the late 1960s and 1970s. So there are many general similarities it seems, except most notably Polanski is guilty by his own testimony-plea and thereby convicted in a court of law.
I don’t recall much of any outcry that accused Catholic clergy not be brought to justice even decades after their crimes. I do recall a relentless campaign to force the institution employing these men to pay damages to the victims because, like teacher Kevin Jenning above, church administrators did not report these crimes. The burden of those damages fell almost entirely upon the shoulders of innocent third parities. Keep in mind that the sex abuse problem in the US public school systems today seems to be two magnitudes worse than that of the worst days of the Catholic sex abuse scandal. I do recall numerous campaigns to lift the statute of limitations so the Catholic Church could be forced to pay damages decades and decades after the alleged crimes long after evidence for defense has been lost.
What are we to make of this rush to absolve Polanski of crime and punishment for which he was duly convicted by his own plea in 1977?
I think the decline of our society as a whole is pretty obvious at this point. Have you seen the videos of men’s gentials being harpooned and fried by cops with Tasers? That’s how the weapon was DESIGNED to work. It targets the genitals whether the user intends to shoot there or not. Cruel and unusual punishment? You betchya! And all over traffic tickets and bad attitudes and such. We have actual guns for the real criminals. Decline of our society? You’ve only touched on the surface. It goes so much deeper than that.

I think the general attitude, among the people who are outraged that Polanski is detained, is that the poor man had suffered so much due to the horrible murder of his beautiful wife and unborn child that he deserved a little underage sex romp to take his mind off the pain. Such a pity that big bad America still plans to imprison him. Obama will probably pardon him.
If extradited to the U.S. he should face a trial — there is no free pass for raping children, which he admitted to doing.

For those of us here who have daughters that are roughly that age, I think that there is no mistaking a 13 year old girl for an 18 yea old girl. Even with lots of make-up and provocative clothes. Polanski knew what he was doing.

The excuses I have seen add up to zero. If there were one of the arguments that had some merit, a person attempting to make a moral argument would focus on that merit. When people keep adding further and further worthless arguments to their case, in hopes of fatiguing the opposition or just to keep talking, they reveal that there is an unspoken argument which they dare not say.
Polanski’s defenders multiply noise for no other reason. They do not believe their own excuses but talk themselves into them in order to keep the argument alive, though they are unable to acknowledge why they want it kept alive.
There are several possibilities. Perhaps they are simply defending one of their own tribe, whether guilty or innocent. Perhaps they believe that sex with a famous person (such as themselves?) is such a prize that the episode was actually a net gain for the girl. Perhaps they believe that things which occurred long ago shouldn’t count. Perhaps they believe that artists are not subject to the same rules as other people.
I doubt I have exhausted the hidden motives, but notice: they all offer hope of selfish gain. If any of these arguments were accepted, even indirectly, perpetrators of any number of other vile acts would have their consciences soothed for a time.
When the Deconstructionist Paul de Man was revealed to have written pro-nazi propaganda before WWII, it illustrated what his critics had stated all along: his philosophy was all an elaborate charade of self-justification.
Hollywood is not attempting to justify Polanski. They are only attempting to justify themselves, using Polanski as a playing field.

How low will Hollywood go in defending Roman Polanski? Former Oscar hostess Whoopi Goldberg tries to parse the meaning of rape between rape and something called “rape-rape” – which, if you read the testimony of Polanski’s victim, Polanski literally did by raping her and then sodomizing her. Goldberg tries to argue that Polanski pled guilty to statutory rape, not actual rape, which is true, and that he served a sentence – which is absolutely false:

What I find much more disturbing is that, in that clip and another one that’s posted at Jezebel, the ladies of The View engage in some terrifying “debate” about what happened to then-13-year-old Samantha Geimer. Whoopi floats the notion that rape “wasn’t the allegation,” and that the victim “was aware,” and Melissa Gilbert thinks it makes a difference that “Mom was in the building.”
What the EFF? I hate to even point out the sickeningly obvious here. First of all, “rape-rape” was the allegation. Samantha Geimer testified that she told Polanski “No!” While Polanski denies this, he loses a couple of credibility points by drugging and sodomizing a 13 year old girl. I’d say she gets the benefit of the doubt here.
Notwithstanding that, though, is that the standard of consent now, “She was aware?” Keep an eye on your drinks, ladies, because in Whoopi’s world, the right dose of rohypnol will leave you just conscious enough to have deserved it.

You have the media editors and personas like Brokaw, along with HOllywood, Democrats, the Kennedy clan, and various other orgs like ACORN in the first class.
You have the productive, honest, and law abiding citizens of America in the second class.
That’s it. The masters and the slaves. The corporate robber barons and their serf-indentured employees. Those with the power to kill, and those that get to be killed. These are generally the two classes that have existed in human history. And the Left wants to equalize this so that everybody can have an opportunity to join one or the other of those two classes. Nobody will be left out, or mixed up in two.
The equality of outcome when the outcome is the total ownership of the human species by an elect few.
If you want justice for people, take it into your own hands. The system is not here to protect you, as individuals. When those like Kennedy invite you into their car or their retreat villas, make sure you end them with your own hands if you want ‘justice’.
Man…is this country in trouble or what? Many of our fellow citizens are just plain nuts.
Which is why this country needs a purge.

Remember, at the beginning of the 1980s, no one would have predicted that by the decade’s close the Berlin Wall would fall, communism would be discredited and the Soviet Union would be less than a couple of years away from dissolution.

In the 1960’s, a Major in the KGB, Antoliy Golitsyn, defected to the West. He warned that communism was going to become more open and more “liberal”. It would begin resembling Western democracy in most ways. Nobody believed Golitsyn back then. But in 1984, Golitsyn accurately predicted that the Berlin wall would yet come down when communism started changing itself across Europe. His prediction came true five years later. He predicted that communism would appear to fall and that communist parties would start changing their names. They would call themselves “social democrats” or use some similar label. Golitsyn explained the inner workings of communism in great detail in a book he wrote called New Lies for Old. Golitsyn warned that a newer and better pack of lies had been devised. It would be very difficult to tell the difference between this new communism and normal Western democracy. Golitsyn believed that even highly trained intelligence agents would be fooled by this new communism…

Golitsyn provided an entire chapter of such predictions, containing 194 distinct auguries. Of these, 46 were not soon falsifiable (it was too early to tell, e.g., whether Russian economic ministries would be dissolved); another 9 predictions (e.g., of a prominent Yugoslavian role in East-Bloc liberalization) seemed clearly wrong. The ‘liberalization’ would be spectacular and impressive. Formal pronouncements might be made about a reduction in the Communist Party’s role; its monopoly would be apparently curtailed. An ostensible separation of powers between legislative, executive, and the judiciary might be introduced. The Supreme Soviet would be given greater apparent power and the president and deputies greater apparent independence.
The posts of President of the Soviet Union and First Secretary of the Party might well be separated. The KGB would be ‘reformed’. Dissidents at home would take up positions of leadership in government. Sakharov might be included in some capacity in government or allowed to teach abroad. The creative arts and cultural and scientific organizations, such as writers’ unions and the Academy of Sciences, would become apparently more independent, as would the trade unions. Political clubs would be opened to non-members of the Communist Party.
Leading dissidents might form one or more alternative political parties. Censorship would be relaxed; controversial books, plays, films, and art would be published, performed and exhibited. Many prominent Soviet performing artists now abroad would return to the Soviet Union and resume their professional careers. Constitutional amendments would be adopted to guarantee fulfillment of the provisions of the Helsinki agreements and a semblance of compliance would be maintained. There would be greater freedom for the Soviet citizens to travel. Western and United Nations observers would be invited to the Soviet Union to witness the reforms in action.
But, as in the Czechoslovak case, the ‘liberalization’ would be calculated and deceptive in that it would be introduced from above. It would be carried out by the Party through its cells and individual members of government, the Supreme Soviet, the courts, and the electoral machinery and by the KGB through its agents among the intellectuals and scientists…”

‘Integration of the Communist Bloc would follow the lines envisaged by Lenin when the Third Communist International was founded. That is to say, the Soviet Union and China would not absorb one another or other Communist states. All the countries of the European and Asiatic Communist zones, together with new Communist states in Europe and the Third World, would join a supranational economic and political Communist federation (this is precisely what the Soviets have in mind for the impending EU collective–TTS). Soviet-Albanian, Soviet-Yugoslav, and Soviet-Romanian disputes and ‘differences’ would be resolved in the wake, or possibly in advance of, Sino-Soviet reconciliation (Golitsyn goes to great lengths in previous chapters to show how the split between the Soviets and the Chinese was completely healed immediately after Stalin’s death…however, they continued the illusion of a split to dupe the West into backing alternating sides, depending on circumstances–TTS). The political, economic, military, diplomatic, and ideological cooperation between all the Communist states, at present partially concealed, would become clearly visible. There might even be public acknowledgment that the splits and disputes were long-term disinformation operations that had successfully deceived the “imperialist” powers. The effect on Western morale can be imagined’ (the Soviets have employed this tactic on numerous occasions–TTS).
‘In the new worldwide Communist federation the present different brands of Communism would disappear, to be replaced by a uniform, rigorous brand of Leninism. The process would be painful. Concessions made in the name of economic and political reform would be withdrawn. Religious and intellectual dissent would be suppressed. Nationalism and all other forms of genuine oppositions would be crushed. Those who had taken advantage of détente to establish friendly Western contacts would be rebuked or persecuted like those Soviet officers who worked with the Allies during the Second World War. In new Communist states–for example, in France, Italy, and the Third World–the “alienated classes” would be reeducated. Show trials of “imperialist agents” would be staged. Action would be taken against nationalist and social democratic leaders, party activists, former civil servants, officers, and priests. The last vestiges of private enterprise and ownership would be obliterated. Nationalization of industry, finance, and agriculture would be completed. In fact, all the totalitarian features familiar from the early stages of the Soviet revolution and the postwar Stalinist years in Eastern Europe might be expected to reappear, especially in those countries newly won for Communism. Unchallenged and unchallengeable, a true Communist monolith would dominate the world.’

We still enjoy some freedom and some democracy but there are no free countries.

Marxists used to call the “class enemy”. Labels like “prejudice,” “bigotry”, “racism
and anti-Semitism” “sexism” are being attached to them. The principal enemies of
free America therefore are in the first place American compatriots who subscribe
to the above philosophy. They are the people who ally themselves with an
international network of like-minded foreigners such as the bureaucrats of the
United Nations and who open the doors to deadly enemies such as Communist

Polanski did the deed, admitted guilt to the deed, had his noggin checked by *experts* and was deemed to have known what he was doing when he was doing the deed – which was basically to get a little girl to ingest alcohol and drugs so he could sexually molest in various ways a 13 year old child – and people have an issue with sending this sack of BLEEEEEEEP to prison?
If he was willing to go to this much trouble to plan this act, it makes me wonder what else he has done that we don’t know about!

The problem with the Soviets was that they had the power to repress people and destroy competition, but couldn’t really replace it with something people would die for. So their system rotted from the inside out.
But once you combine sex and selfish pleasures, ala Hollywood, you can indeed create a socialist and communist totalitarian system where people are happy. Or at least, happy to be slaves rather than free men and women.
Of course, that probably wouldn’t last very long. As sexual liberation itself simply destroys itself once it achieves its goals.
One of the best ways to psychologically render someone incapable of defense is to simply bombard them with surprise after surprise. ACORN was looking, if not good, at least viable after the first video. They were on damage control, starting up the dirt quest on the film makers, and making all kinds of innocent charges. THen came the second video.

By that time, ACORN had been effectively decapitated, if one will accept a Mexican gang war analogy (where some thugs youtubed the severed heads of their competitors).
The same is with Polansky and Tookie and Saddam. Once you hang em, with the noose, it’s like the ultimate shock therapy. They’ve created endless defenses of such people, and so long as they think it is worth something, they’ll keep doing it. But once Tookie was dead, once Saddam was dead, you don’t hear jack anymore
That’s cause the dead can’t be resurrected by propaganda and alies, and the Left knows this very well.
Kill Polansky while the Left are doing their best to defend them, and you will show the Left how ineffectual their methods are. How utterly helpless they are. THey become demoralized. They become less prone to doing something like it in the future. They also, as a personal byproduct, may refuse to support child prostitution or exploitation, even though they had gotten money from it in the past.
One of the reasons why I like executions, though not necessarily the legal Death Penalty, is that it is so psychological traumatizing to those that have done everything to attempt to stop it. It makes them feel so helpless, and it grinds their face in the agony of defeat just a little bit more.
