No, no, no; it’s not really…

a Mao jacket that Obama’s wearing as he grins from ear to ear. It must be a Nehru jacket—-right? Right?

And anyway, it’s not as though it’s red.

And anyway, he’s just being polite.

And anyway….

Neo, the link isn’t working. It gets a message about the hosting having been moved.

  2. Sam Says:

Link has trailing double-quote character instead of trailing forward slash. Otherwise correct and functional.

  3. neo-neocon Says:

    Thanks—fixed!

  4. Gray Says:

No, no, no; They didn’t really just release 30 Guantanamo Detainees:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_guantanamo_judges

And anyway, Gladys Kessler is a Judge and knows what she is doing, right?

And anyway, these were the good guys who were accidently in Guantanamo.

    And anyway….

  5. kcom Says:

I have been reduced by incredulity to one particular thought that repeats itelf in my brain (and in a thread from a day or two ago):

The sooner this doofus is gone from the presidency, the better. Let’s just hope he hasn’t done irretrievable damage by then.

The details of any individual stupidity are now irrelevant because the theme is universal.

  6. vanderleun Says:

Hey, thanks for the link. I value it more than I can say!

  7. Susan in Seattle Says:

I heave yet another heavy sigh.

  8. neo-neocon Says:

kcom: Unfortunately, I don’t think stupidity has anything to do with it. Obama is far from stupid. In fact, he is intelligent, and I believe that most of his moves are well-thought-out and intended to send a message both domestically and abroad. He does make a gaffe now and then (like the “57 states”). But these are not gaffes.

  9. Promethea Says:

The photograph is so odd. Although the Chinese still celebrate Mao because they give him credit for preventing the break-up of the nation, they don’t seem to wear Mao jackets any more.

Is this photo meant to be a dress-up photo like one that would show American leaders wearing cowboy boots? I just don’t get it.

  10. Occam's Beard Says:

What’s the problem? It’s a busboy’s uniform. Obama was never actually President; it was all just an elaborate joke, and now Obama’s back bussing tables at Olive Garden, God’s in His Heaven, and all’s well.

Boy, they had me going there for a while…

  11. turfmann Says:

I’ll have some of what Occam is drinking. please.

    *sigh*

Such a long, long time until 2012.

So long, in fact, that I would actually vote for Hilary in lieu of another four years of Obama.

  12. Occam's Beard Says:

    That would be Dewar’s, turfmann.

  13. nyo Says:

These things are annoying yet a tad petty, do we not have things of substance to discuss?

  14. Occam's Beard Says:

Frankly, I disagree, nyo. In and of themselves they’re prosaic, but yet they’re symbolic as well, and fraught with significance in that context, because his displays of deference reflect his values. Would he bow to the Pope? Would he bow to bin Laden, should he ever meet him (on this side of the Styx)? To whom would he show deference, and why?

Notwithstanding the major issue: no American President should ever show deference to any world leader. Period. Ever.

  15. T Says:

It seems more and more that Obama keeps trying to “hang out with the cool kids” just to show how cool he, himself, is.

My God, the country is being run by a bunch of high school sophomores!

  16. camojack Says:

    Hallowe’en redux?

  17. Wolla Dalbo Says:

Talk about putting on a disguise! I had forgotten about this little Freudian slip by Obama from before he was elected, in which he talked about “my Muslim faith” until hastily corrected by interviewer George Stephanopoulis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtI6ixXjf1g)

  18. Wolla Dalbo Says:

Looking at this clip also reminded me that we have gone from the youthful, smiling, somewhat JFK-like Obama of the campaign, to the older-looking, angry, imperious, Mussolini tilt of the head Obama in less than a year.

  19. southernjames Says:

I am somewhat pessimistic, and not at all in the camp of “oh gee, I just can’t wait until 2010,” or “gosh, only 3 more years.”

People who only frequent sites where the posters are pretty much in ideological agreement, don’t see the wildly different opinion a HUGE chunk of the populace has on socialism, Obama, etc.

For example, after the health care bill passed with the abortion exclusion – I went to a feminist site out of curiousity called Reclusive Leftist, since it appears that NOTHING is more important in Feminist-world than that issue. …….

Ah…..let’s just say the opinions, tone, feelings, etc., of the commentators on that site on issues such as nationalized health care, and “jumping to conclusions” about the Fort Hood killer, by all those “unhinged wingnuts”….differ ever so slightly from the opinions expressed here. Let’s just also say that the tea party movement is not exactly met with….ah….a whole lot of respect, on those sort of sites.

And for all I know that site may get as many if not more, readers, commenters, and lurking fellow-travelors as this site.

Look at how how this total disaster of a President’s “personal” approval ratings, somehow, inexplicably, remain. All it will take to salvage the mid-terms for the Dems, and also sweep him into a disasterous second term will be for there be a short-term, artificial, and contrived economic recovery at just the right moment…….say – unemployment dropping from 10% back down to 8.5%. Timing of the stimulus $$ kicking in???

Then the state run propaganda machine will blitz the airways, giving full credit to the Boy King for..

“what some have argued is a near miraculous exercise of stewardship over the economy towards bringing us out of economic recession he inherited from the Bush administration, against all naysayers and the noise of partisan negativity.”

(yes, I do think I could write for Newsweek, or be a staff writer for ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN evening news).

And think about this. How many adult, registered voter Americans, do you think ACTUALLY saw or are aware of his latest “crotch salute” or prostrating bow to the Emperor of Japan?

    These are dark times.

  20. Gray Says:

These things are annoying yet a tad petty, do we not have things of substance to discuss?

Y’know, other than the fact our president is wearing a Chinese Communist uniform jacket.

It’s the political equivalent of using a “sharpie” to put a swastika between your eyes for a picture with Charles Manson fans.

  21. Wolla Dalbo Says:

To illustrate my comparison of the arrogance of Obama’s body language vs. the arrogant body language of Mussolini, I submit the following evidence:

    Here is Mussolini (http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/91/9891-004-45A0F7B2.jpg)

    Here is Obama (http://neveryetmelted.com/wp-images/ObamaHalo.jpg)

    and here (http://media.photobucket.com/image/arrogant%20%20Obama/glasscottage/Politics/ArroganceObama2.jpg)

    and here as well (http://cultureandfreedom.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Barack-Obama-arrogant.jpg)

  22. Daniel in Brookline Says:

That “crotch salute” picture is mind-blowing.

The three officers are all saluting, as even a Commander-in-Chief who never served is expected to do. But if he had a problem with it from that perspective, he could have done what the suited man did, and placed his right hand over his heart. He chose to do neither.

If we needed another example of his belief that America is “just another country”, unworthy of any special treatment from him, this is it.

    DiB

  23. southernjames Says:

At the VERY least, a hand over his heart.

This is not the first time he has done the crotch salute.

If it was a Muslim or Japanese or any totalitarian regime in the world, and if everyone around him was bowing at the waist; or was raising their left hand in a ceremonious wave or whatever…..he would be doing it too. You know damn well he would

But it’s is just the USA. “God DAMMN Americka,” remember? So if the Americans around him are saluting or holding their hands over their hearts….meh…….hands over crotch will do.

  24. T Says:

    Southernjames (at 10:16 above)

I can understand your pessimism. O dose of pessimism and skepticism in these troubled times is a very good thing. Keep in mind however, that one does not need to change the mind of 52 million voters, one only needs to change the mind of 7 million or so and things to change dramatically.

I think this has already been done. My question, is: “Will ongoing circumstances maintain this change of voter symapthies for the next 3 years?”

  25. T Says:

sorry, should be “A dose of pessimism. . . “

  26. Occam's Beard Says:

Cheering thought on a day without much else to cheer about: imagine the Messiah passing the Marine color guard, and instead of saluting they each did an Obamaesque ball cup.

I donate that one freely to David Zucker. Go with it, Dave! And there’s lots more where that came from!

  27. Timmeh Says:

To be fair it’s not a Mao jacket, it’s some sort of traditional Singaporean thing. Photo taken at APEC where many other heads of state donned the same garb for photos. Doesn’t mean he’s not still a commie though.

    http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46733000/jpg/_46733222_008276737-1.jpg

  28. Richard Says:

The AP picture is of the leaders of “APEC”, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation organization. I doubt that these are “Mao jackets”, because APEC holds its meetings in Singapore, not in the PRC. Mao jackets have pockets, these do not. Y’all are freaking out over nothing in this case, calling anything that doesn’t look like a western button down shirt a “mao jacket”.

  29. rickl Says:

Timmeh: I think that photo looks like a Star Trek convention.

  30. waltj Says:

“…now Obama’s back bussing tables at Olive Garden…”

That we should be so lucky. Of course, the way his presidency has gone so far, he’d be the one to spill the glass of red wine on my date’s white dress, and dump the the plate of half-eaten spaghetti in my lap.

APEC has a tradition of having the participants model various forms of more or less silly clothing. This year’s silk tunic with mandarin collar (not a “Mao jacket”, which is a far more utilitarian garment) continues the trend. I’m sure it’ll be flowered shirts when Hawaii hosts the event in 2011.

  31. Artfldgr Says:

the form of dress, rather the tailoring lines of such are common in asia, and not just as the wests Nehru idea.

i have some shirts from indonesia with a similar line, but they arent Nehru. and i do wear them once in a while. however, by western tastes i think the term garish might cover it as far as the complexity and boldness of the pattern. Loud in an unusual way might do it too.

look all over asia and you will see all kinds of short collar… the collar in the west seems to fit a peoples who spend a lot more time in the cold.

given that even americans find bolo wearing odd when they arent from a place that wears them a lot more (texas), than places that dont (boston), lots of garb (and customs) around the world would surprise.

  32. Ymarsakar Says:

THe Chinese love to hate inferior and dumb blacks. I’m sure they got quite an entertainment boost to Chinese pride right there.

  33. Nolanimrod Says:

Obiwon IS stupid. Just look at that picture. Somebody just made a joke and Obiwon doesn’t realize he’s the butt but other people do. Look at their faces. One or two aren’t happy campers.
