Full speed ahead on immigration reform? — 17 Comments

  1. If they want to pass immigration “reform” badly enough, they will find a way, even if they have to break (or change) every rule in the book to do so.

What are a few rules compared to the limitless value of diversity?

  2. The disconnect is enormous. Politicians recognise that Americans want the illegal immigration problem addressed, but immediately translate that into first working out some amnesty thingy.

As if that’s what generates so much energy among the citizenry – that we haven’t addressed amnesty. Whenever you hear the word comprehensive being thrown in, that’s the translation: “we’ll address the whole problem, mostly by spending all our energy on the parts pressure groups think are important, not the citizenry.” Actually, that’s what comprehensive reform always means governmentally. It’s bait-and-switch.

Down the road, I’d be glad to enter into discussions about amnesty. Hell, I’d even consider offering some. Later. First solve the problems of people coming in and violent druglords our southern border.

Bingo, says Gringo. First things first. There was an amnesty back in 1986. It did nothing about border control. We can never shut the flow off 100%, but a little effort can go a long way.

Amnesty is just an attempt on the part of the Democrats to get themselves more voters.

I doubt that anyone reading this blog will accuse me of racism et al for my wanting stronger border control. If anyone ever does, my reply is that when I was in Houston between rigs in Latin America, I usually stayed at a rooming house populated mostly by fluent Spanish speakers, some of them born in the US, some of them not. They called me “mojado” [wetback] , as a term of endearment, for my proficiency in Spanish.

Years ago I lived next to a park. At one time there was a mattress in the park with a bunch of beer bottles around this. In a public park. For some days. This neighborhood had a lot of illegal aliens. I took a magic marker and wrote on the mattress: “Esto es un parque. No es un basurero. Limpien esto o regresen a Mexico, mojados de mierda.” While that may have been politically incorrect language, several days later I noted that the mattress and beer bottles had been removed. It got results.

When I was a substitute teacher, I preferred teaching bilingual classes, as the kids were better behaved than children of native-born Americans. Most illegal aliens are hardworking honest people.
But we are overwhelmed. We need some breathing space. Moreover, better border control will assist us against Hezbollah- a friend of Hugo Chavez- and Al Queda. Yes, the border is already being used.

  4. Legislatively, the danger here is NOT the democrats, it’s the RINO’s. Anyone opposing this bill will be labeled a racist. It’s going to be their primary tactic to discredit the opposition and thus gain passage.

  5. And didn’t BHO just today announce he doesn’t like what Arizona is doing, and strongly hinted that the feds (i.e himself) will be closely monitoring the situation in Arizona.

A very not so subtle, Chigcago style, hint to AZ to watch out. I wonder how this will play out. Is the protection of its borders a state’s right, or the federal government’s? What happens if Texas joins in? I can’t see California or New Mexico following AZ, but 2 out of the 4 border states would send a message to DC.

  6. The bill was just signed. Cellphones set to “vibrate” are going off all over the Sonoran Desert, voices on the other end urging the hikers to hustle. But seriously, here come the fireworks. All kinds of “Henry Louis Gates” type of actions will be planned I’m sure, LaRaza getting the foot solidiers out there.

  7. I agree with Geoffrey Britain. It will be interesting to see what Graham, the new maverick of massachusetts and a few others are going to do. When Obama called the new maverick from air force1 this week, without hesitation, the new maverick should have responded “no amnesty”. Instead he said that he will be glad to review the bill …

  8. The dumbest sentence ever written in a newspaper was penned in our own estimable Los Angeles Times, in describing the Arizona bill:

“The bill would make it a crime to be in the state illegally.”

And they have editors and fact checkers to vet this stuff!

  9. Where is this notion coming from that America should somehow be “above” the rest of the world in how we treat ilegal intruders? Is it that the richer the country the more adherence to political correctness is demanded? I don’t get how we survive like this.

  10. And if i live to be 100 i’ll never figure out how to spell Illeagle..ileagle..ilegal..illegle..illegal..GRRRR

  11. My suggestion is that the whole country adopt Mexican law en regards to illegal immigration.

What can they say about that? Hey we are just doing what the Mexican government does. I would love to see a high profile Politician push the “Adopt Mexico’s immigration policy”. Lay it all out in detail. We are just trying to learn from those “wise latinas.”

  12. I posted this on another blog
“As far as Mexico owning the Southwest, does any one think the Commanche or the Sioux were flying Mexican flags? Interesting thing is, if you read the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo, which ended the War of 1848, you will find the natives named as a third party to the Mexicans and Americans. Not to mention the fact, that many of those Indians who had been partially assimilated by the Spaniards, (ie Mexicans) fought for Texas Independence in the 1830’s. You might also study the history of the fight over the cannon at Gonzales, Tx. The Mexican government had given it to the Anglo colonist to defend themselves against the real Natives. After Santa Anna came to power, he tried to repo it, triggering the battle known as the “Lexington of Texas”. The flag associated with that battle, “The Come and Take it Flag”, I saw at the one Texas Tea Party I attended.

  13. What will be our courses of action in case the dems do pass an amnesty bill that enfranchises million of illegals?

If the Republicans don’t take over in November, the only one I can think of is: secede.

  15. I do home nursing care. Since I am fluent in Spanish, I get assigned to a lot of Mexican kids. It is startling to hear the families talk about how their wages are being depressed by even more recent arrivals. They may not understand all the subtleties of economics, but they do know that the situation is bad for them. As always, the Democrats will try to paint this, too, as racism. It is not. It is just common sense. There is no way to maintain a bourgeois Republic while importing low-skilled, low- wage, third-world labor, at rates many times the inflow of nineteenth century immigration, which many people at the time thought was unsustainable.

My suggestion is that the whole country adopt Mexican law en regards to illegal immigration.

I second the motion. I was once on a Mexican bus not far from the Guatemalan border. Police entered the bus and took away those without proper documents.

My most amusing experience with document check was on a bus in Argentina in the days of the military regimes. The soldier couldn’t find my (work) visa. I played dumb, and he eventually handed back my passport.

It will be difficult to maintain the 40 to keep the filibuster going, as others have pointed out. “Racist” is a powerful cry.

  17. The Loathsome Dems have their eyes on the 10s of millions of new DEM voters down the line.
