Helen Thomas retires — 16 Comments

  1. It took a lot longer than it should have. I guess this means you can’t say Jews should go back to the concentration camps, even if you are a good liberal.

  2. Since she demanded that Israelis abandon their country and report to the Auschwitz area, Thomas was nixed from a high school commencement speech, her agent dumped her, a coauthor swore never to work with her again, and now WaPo is announcing her retirement.

  3. The details on the High School speech:

Veteran journalist Helen Thomas, who recently made controversial comments about Israel and Palestine, agreed Sunday not to appear as commencement speaker at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda. lan Goodwin, principal of Whitman, where objections to the appearance had been raised, said he reached a niece of Thomas’s earlier in the day. “We had a mutual understanding about her not coming,” he said.

“Graduation celebrations are not the venue for divisiveness,” Goodwin said in an e-mail to Whitman parents. “Graduation is the time for a cohesive and joyous celebration of our students’ achievements,” he wrote.

Thomas, 89, who has covered the White House for decades, provoked criticism by her response in an impromptu video interview that was posted online. In a brief comment, she said Israelis should “get the hell” out of Palestine and go to places including Poland, Germany and the United States.

In an interview, Whitman parent Raisa Slepoy said, “I don’t know why anybody would ask a person like that to speak at a commencement ceremony . . . especially where there’s a pretty large Jewish population.”

If Thomas had appeared, Slepoy said, there would “be a lot of people booing her off the stage. . . . It would be an embarrassment.”

The remarks have “already stirred up the community quite a bit,” Slepoy said, bringing up “bad feelings.” Germany, she said, is not a Jewish homeland.

Reportedly, a campaign against Thomas’s appearance, which had been scheduled for weeks, was waged on Facebook.

Goodwin said he had received e-mails from Whitman parents and students, some merely calling attention to the statements, others suggesting that perhaps he should reconsider the invitation. Thomas has apologized, calling the remarks a mistake.

Goodwin said he and Thomas’s niece talked about having her meet with students next year in a different forum. Neither Thomas nor her niece could be reached late Sunday.

The commencement is to be June 14 at Constitution Hall.

  4. Sorry. that was from moonbattery..

but the poitn i wanted to make is that the progressives, communists, socialists, and all these areas, do not represent majority good peoples thoughts, ideas, or behaviors.

that is, germany was not all in or all out, what happened was that a high enouhg concentration was reached in power… and they do the things and position inducements and punihments to acheive their ends.

and THIS is why i said its not good to use the typical useful idiot as any measure of the points of their leaders or their moves.

what feminist leaders want, has nothing to do with the useful idiot women that follow them and ignore their goals..

this is why on that side of the spectrum this kind of falling out is COMMON and why you can read into what they are doing that way…

at some point you present so many different faces you forget which face to put on

the leaders of the progressives ahve always been hateful, paranoid, controlling, amoral, vicious, etc.

i would say cutting off a womans breasts to keep people from voting, as vicious as you can get.

but so is the rest of what they do, since they NEVER are proud of what they actually do!

if that alone was a measure of morals, we would be infinitely better off.

  5. Well, that’s too bad. Her sacking is more beneficial to the Left, as now they can pretend she’s not part of their mental outlook. She got a cat out of the bag – now they muzzled and shoved the creature back, and made a show of injured innocence.

They will camouflage better next time.

  6. so true Tatyana. So true.

There are those moments though that Obama brings forward 🙂

  7. Helen Thomas has been poisonous for years. She’s now made herself glow-in-the-dark radioactive. It couldn’t have happened too soon, and it highlights the dangers of the Left telling the truth about itself–a truth we should demand

  8. armchair pessimist,

I’m not so sure. If this opportunity is used to show that her positions were based on ignorance (ie, that most Israelis came from Germany and Poland), it could awaken a little curiosity about the merits of other anti-Israeli positions.

  9. Helen Thomas outdid Dan Rather in her last poisonous appearance onstage….and that took a lot.

But we should not kid ourselves: someone like Thomas who held centerstage so long wjll not go quietly, and she, like Rather, will never accept exile. She is one of the MSM elite, almost all of whom are of one mind one heart — and think as she does. Just as Rather managed to get himself in front of cameras again after his Fall from Grace, it is likely Thomas will find like minds who will celebrate her as the Grande Dame (more like Grand Damn) of the Press, and will grant her access to her public before long. I woudn’t be surprised if it was this Administration itself who manages this: they clearly control the MSM even more than our current Congress.

  10. And, yes, Tatyana got it just right. More’s the pity that we, the public, know well that “they muzzled and shoved the creature back, and made a show of injured innocence,” and meekly again accept another cover up. Instead, perhaps we should take their own credo to heart and learn not to “waste a crisis” in order to shine light where it is desperately needed.

  11. There is a great benefit that innurs to us from the progressive’s hypocritical muzzling and shoving the creature back: Its not what the Muslims would do. Such a thing drives a wedge between that unholy coalition.
