“I will still be Speaker in five weeks,” [Pelosi] said. “I have big confidence in my candidates. They’re excellent; they’re battle-tested. They know what they believe, and they’re doing just fine in their districts.”
This is one of those uncomfortable moments when you’re speaking to a crazy-person and they’re getting all agitated and insistent and they say, “I will be Speaker of the House. You believe me, don’t you?”
And you resort to that thing you know is just going to make them come at you with scissors, but what else can you say? “I believe that you believe that, Nancy.”

About Me
Previously a lifelong Democrat, born in New York and living in New England, surrounded by liberals on all sides, I've found myself slowly but surely leaving the fold and becoming that dread thing: a neocon.

Well, she will still be Speaker in five weeks from now — but probably not in five months from now.

My District, Florida’s 1st Congressional, is safe. But both the Florida 2nd and Florida 8th are both currently held by dems and closely contested in this election. I just made a contribution to the Republican candidates in both cases. The Florida 8th is especially important. It is now held by that idiot Alan Grayson and being challenged by Daniel Webster.
I would encourage each of you to find at least one contested race near you and do whatever you can to make a difference. Consider it a pin in a voodoo doll for Nancy.

“…my candidates”… I can’t imagine a Republican speaker saying that.
I wish I had buckets of money to help retirebarney.com, among others.

I predict that very early on Nov. 3nd the defeated members of the Democrat majorities will gather to attach themselves to their seats with Crazy Glue. They will have to be removed surgically.

I’ve never really been sure when politicians say these things if they really believe them or not (well, as said from a strict reading five weeks from now she *will* still be speaker as the congress critters terms are not over at that point, but that isn’t what she meant).
I’ll buy the idea that she will still be speaker – we have a long way to go to get that over turned and I’m afraid that optimism has become expectation and a HUGE win could still be seen as a loss because of that. I’m quite optimistic she will be gone (and trust me, I’m not an optimist), but I’m not going to bet much on it even with good odds.
As for the rest – what is she supposed to say? “Yea, we are *sooo* going to get our butts stomped!”. Then again Pelosi isn’t the most astute politician outside of her constituents and the Washington Beltway (both of which she is VERY adept at working for her own gain). I’ll buy she believes it, for one thing she is acting as if she does (Obama, OTOH, is bitter underneath speaking of how great things are which tells me he doesn’t believe his own rhetoric).
Outside of DC and San Fran I do not know anyone that likes her and only a few that do not cringe when her name is mentioned – but then for her those are the only two places she has to win at. Who cares if 100% of the people who can’t vote for her hate her guts if 50+% of those that can will vote for her?
But then that attitude is what hurt Republicans as a whole and is now killing the Democrats. Sadly the Republicans haven’t fixed it (but I’m hopeful – not optimistic – that the tea parties can fix that over the next 4-6 years in primary fights) and I expect a swinging pendulum with respect to who controls congress and the presidency for the next few election cycles, though one with a great deal of friction and quickly moving towards stopping.
One of the things I think the Republican have going on now is a short term loss of power over fragmentation but it will work out in the long run – the Dems need to have the same thing happen to them. The gloating over the tea party in-fighting in the Conservative ranks is what needs to happen (we need to go back to the Big Tent Conservatism of Reagan and finally fulfill the promise of The Contract With America), for the left to remain a real contender over the next decade they need to have their own version of it. As is they are reflexively supporting massive corruption as “Not Republicans” and can’t see that most people either do not care the party (so called independents) or find that a feature (Republicans). As we try and create a proactive message there will be pains, but at the end of that road we are pro-active and will win.

Here’s another race that bears watching:
Can Charles Lollar Beat Steny Hoyer?
I found this via a link from a different Ace of Spades post, and I just sent Lollar a donation.

I have no use for Pelosi, but she has been an immensely effective speaker for her party. How many speakers could get 50 of their party members in conservative districts to walk the plank and end their career by repeatedly voting against the will of the people? I’ll bet there are lots of representatives who would like a do over on some of those votes, but she scammed them.

My rep is Jason Altmire. I have agreed with some of his votes and disagreed with some, but always felt that he voted with the will of the people in his district. He held numerous town halls in person and on the phone, he sends emails keeping us informed, and his website clearly states his positions and voting record and the reasoning behind each vote. I contacted his office and said that while I’d normally have voted for him, I could not because Pelosi must go! I can only hope this is happening all over the country.
