Gamers are good for something, after all

Very good indeed.

The human mind is still pretty ingenious.

Funny what happens when work becomes play and the drive to excel actually fuels something worthwhile. There’s probably a lesson in there somewhere.

*snort* My husband got to spend all of PAX weekend recruiting gamers for the AF. They are VERY good for some things, indeed.

It’s the power of competition and why winning for “free” does not motivate.

  4. Ymarsakar Says:

The government would tax the winning group and redistribute it to the losing group. When after 50 years, they still haven’t found the solution to the game puzzle, the government will create something called “enemies” to blame and watch on.

Well, someone has to be The Grinch. I don’t think that the term “gamer,” in common usage, includes people who play “a fun-for-purpose video game in which gamers, divided into competing groups, compete to unfold chains of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins — using a set of online tools.” Doesn’t sound like “Grand Theft Auto: City Vice” to me.

  6. Tesh Says:

Capn, “gamer” can mean a lot of different things. Sure, we’re probably not talking about violence-addled brain dead nitwits, but metrics have been pretty clear of late that such aren’t the only people playing games. Foldit appeals to that Bejeweled crowd that is almost the silent majority these days. Sure, the media would have you believe that games are only the gutter trash like God of War or GTA, but that’s pretty far from the truth.

Tesh: Would the story have been newsworthy if the headline had not relied upon the common misperception?

  8. Foxfier Says:

    Capn Rusty-
What if they were instead relying on the common belief that all online games are time wasters? (Five minutes on facebook should expose you to it… it’s even more common than the “all gamers are teenage males in their mother’s basement” type belief.)

  9. Ymarsakar Says:

That’s like the stereotype that galge and eroge are only played by males.
