In a completely predictable development in the Cain case…
…Gloria Allred digs up another Cain accuser, Sharon Bialek, who ups the ante and accuses him of genital groping in a car in July of 1997. In another enormous surprise, the accuser failed to report the offense to the NRA or to come forward until now.
There is absolutely nothing other than fear of notoriety to stop anyone who’s ever had any contact with Herman Cain from making such as allegation if she so chooses. And some people, of course, are attracted to notoriety. As more women come forward and accuse Cain in this way, people who are already inclined to think Cain guilty will believe that this constitutes a pattern of behavior on his part.
But if these claims are going to have any credibility at all, there will either need to have been witnesses to the act and/or compelling evidence of it (which is almost never the case), and/or the accuser is at least going to have to have filed an official claim with the authorities at the time and be willing to talk now and reveal her identity and the specifics of that claim (the latter assumes a release from any settlement that would bar such discussion; the Cain accusers were offered such a release from the NRA but declined). Otherwise, a gaggle of women could come forward and it would not tell us much—except that there’s a bandwagon to be jumped on and a reputation to smear.
Oh, and by the way, my position has nothing to do with the alleged perpetrator being a Republican in this case. I would and do feel the same no matter what the political orientation of the accused. For example, Juanita Broaddrick has no credibility as far as I’m concerned (see this for one example of why), and I’m always amazed every time an otherwise seemingly fair-minded Republican cites her as “the woman Bill Clinton raped.” There’s plenty of evidence that Clinton was/is a womanizer, but next to none that he ever coerced or threatened anyone.
[ADDENDUM: By the way, just to be clear, I believe it is most definitely possible that Cain is guilty as charged. But there is no way to know at this point; the sort of evidence I require is simply unavailable so far. I also believe that Cain has been wounded by this and will not be the nominee. But then again, I never thought he would be the nominee.]
If Cain was such a womanizer, every one who worked with him would have known about it. There are no secrets in business organizations.
Maybe Cain should have smoked crack, hung out with terrorists, and solicited the advice of communists. You know, ho-hum “doesn’t everybody?” kind of stuff, kinda like having overdue library books and tearing the tags off of mattresses.
But a totally unsubstantiated allegation of going in for some slap and tickle fourteen years ago – that’s where we draw the line, by God!

And the fact that a nurse (who was not a nurse at a hospital officially treating her, but rather a colleague and friend at the convention with her) says her lip was swollen and she told her the story at the time is not convincing to me, either.
Let me tell you where I’m coming from on this, and why I say it’s not convincing to me. I happen to be familiar with Massachusetts divorce law as it was under the fault system. It required marital fault (such as hitting, for example) to get a divorce, and the fact of the assault had to be corroborated by a witness. When that was the law, in order to obtain a divorce people regularly perjured themselves and got friends to perjure themselves in order to corroborate their testimony.
People lie very often in such situations; that’s my cynical point of view, and that’s why I am suspicious of all such claims in the absence of strong evidence or going to authorities at the time and having the injury properly documented. Broaddrick’s claim is especially weak because of her history of being a liar (and, if you believe her rape story, also a perjurer).

Since I like Cain, I want him to be innocent. So here’s my imagined plot:
George Soros and David Axelrod concoct a plan to destroy Cain by hiring a convincing actress to impersonate a propositioned woman. They work with Gloria Allred to come up with a plausible sequence of events to make Cain look bad.
They set the stage beforehand by having some alleged propositioned women say that they were propositioned, but they don’t reveal the names. Meanwhile, forged documents are created to establish the records at the hotels. Other needed papers are also doctored. Soros has the money to do this. It just takes a bit of planning.
Very clever plot, if I do say so myself.
As this sideshow continues, I suggest that Cain is becoming the best conservative candidate to defeat Obama.
Romney is not a conservative. He gets more of the squishy middle, but loses most of the principled conservative vote. Barry wins in a low-turnout election.
If anyone else (not Cain) surges to the nomination, it reinforces the lefty stereotype of the GOP. The squishy middle is not voting for any of them, and the righteous Progs can get all motivated for another charge against their righty bogeyman. Another Texan blowhard…the wicked witch of the north…a resurrection of their enemy in the 90s…Dr. Crackpot? Listening to Prog radio tells me they would love to take on any of those “wackos”.
Cain shakes up the established order. He splits the squishy middle, and has the charisma to keep the righties sufficiently fired up. Cain is the candidate for Joe Sixpack, for the middle class blacks, and everyone who wants to make a statement against political correctness and the overt nanny state.
The Cain coalition wins in swing states, and Barry loses.
The evangelical factions that will now suspect Cain’s faithfulness/character would rather have a charismatic sinner than a monotonous Mormon.
Unless, as Neo writes, we get some credible evidence that Cain did something actionable. Absent that, he’s the wedge that splits the bi-factional ruling party and shatters the leftosphere.
I don’t think the idea is to destroy Cain; it’s just to stir the soup, and give the impression that any and all Republican candidates have clouds over them. If I were orchestrating such a campaign, I wouldn’t try to knock out any of the present candidates, but rather just see to it that they walked into press conferences with toilet paper stuck to their shoes.
The problem with knocking anyone out is that the opposing party might blindside you with a dark horse candidate you hadn’t previously considered/ investigated/ smeared. Why risk a wild card candidate when you can arrange to face a damaged known one?
If Bialek had been a cleaning lady in the hotel, the headline would have read: Nut screws washer and bolts.
Sounds more like by-a-lick got a case of jungle fever and upon not receiving her looked for prescription carried the fever, latent, until such time as she could once again enter into consideration. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. That to me makes as much sense as “he pulled my head into his crotch.”

I can’t imagine Cain doing something so crass and vulgar and it angers me that what is most likely happening is a smear by volume tactic. I hope all tea party candidates are taking notes and preparing their congressional and senate campaigns accordingly. I do take comfort in the general rule: Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I can’t get past Allred bringing the accuser to the press. Everything she does is calculated to get her own face in the media while simultaneously destroying someone else’s career.
Its 14 years after the alleged assault. Now she conveniently contacts Allred just in time to smear Cain as he surges forward and somehow this is supposed to be credible? This doesn’t pass the sniff test. It stinks like a dead skunk in the middle of the road.
Cain needs to stomp on this like a cockroach in a third world hotel. His should sue for defamation of character and bring this out into the open.

There should be credit card records for the hotel, restaurant, car, etc. Has Gloria Allred, or any of the MSM pursued those? Why were no questions allowed of Ms Bialick? Are their any witnesses, friends, etc. who can verify Bialick’s story? Short of some strong corroborating evidence, this is a classic she said, he said story. There was no harm, no foul, no laws broken except…….one of the parties is running for President. Electronic lynching? Sure looks that way for now.
