Obama the boyfriend

Although I’m heartily sick of the topic of Barack Obama right now, I can’t quite ignore this piece about Obama’s college and immediate post-college years, as seen through the eyes of his girlfriends and the love letters they saved (or perhaps I should say “correspondence”), and the journal entries they turned over to David Maraniss, author of a new biography of Obama that has just been excerpted in Vanity Fair.

I only skimmed the piece, which is long and not really all that interesting. But I read enough to say the following:

Assuming that the letters and other writings are authentic—and I have no reason to doubt that at the moment—we can say that Obama was a not-atypical bright young guy who wrote pretentiously about Literature and Life and Love in classic student style. We can also say that he’s clearly heterosexual, and that much of his personality back then seems very familiar to those who study him now. The coolness, the distance, the sense of someone behind a veil and profoundly unknowable, were already evident even to the women who got closest to him.

I also think it’s interesting to compare and contrast Obama with Romney at approximately the same age. They were almost opposites. Obama was still searching for a father and an identity; Romney had an unusually strong dose of both. Obama was drifting; Romney was a family man who already was married with children and focused on his future (Romney married at 22 and became a father at 23). Obama smoked and drank, and more; Romney was a teetotaler and non-smoker. And yet they both were the products of similar educations: private prep schools and Harvard Law (and in Romney’s case, Harvard Business as well).

    And why would you since the machine has now had a number of years to prepare and place them?

  3. Assuming this story was planted/encouraged by the Obama Campaign, this is a racially notable moment: Obama with a white girl.

    This means the Obama Campaign has judged it more important to build Obama’s likeability … than to hide a photo of Obama with a white girl. Its an acknowledgement that the Obama Campaign judges that the subset of undecided voters who are racist … is smaller than the subset of undecided voters who do not like Obama. Notable. Its a hint that Obama Campaign internal polling, re Obama’s likeability, does not jibe with public polling re the President’s likeability.

    Or, maybe the Obama Campaign had nothing to do with this. Maybe this was all David Marannis, and low hanging fruit, and has no deeper significance.

  4. I thought this was interesting: “Obama was the central character in his letters, in a self-conscious way, with variations on the theme of his search for purpose and self-identity.” Sadly, it still seems to be his main theme.

  5. vanderleun: did you read the letters? The tone has the ring of authenticity, in part because they’re so pretentious and self-conscious. If someone were forging them I very much doubt they’d put that tone in, and they’d almost certainly have made them read better.

  6. I agree with Althouse that this supports that he wrote his own memoirs- very similar styles (I’ve read excerpts, I’m not plowing through those things).

    Amazing that they could only find this stuff 4 years later. I’m stunned.

  8. Well, one got everywhere on merit. The other was handed everything, possibly with politics in mind even then. Both had big money back in the family tree, I believe, which… sort of boosted their odds, regardless of merit. One worked with what he had, the other just took whatever was given. Nothing has changed, from what I can tell. Nobel prize, anyone?

    I already couldn’t stand to see his face and hear his voice even before he was elected. So love letters, no.

    “Obama Admits Fabricating Girlfriend in Memoir.”

    Links to a Politico piece explaining that all the alleged girlfriends in his memoir were “composite characters,” as BO admits. Not real.

    Jury’s still out, but I think he’s at the very least a switch-hitter.

  17. I think Obama is a dangerous man mostly because I suspect he is a front man for a dangerous group of people.

    I have a strong impression that he was picked up early on by this group (probably including Bill Ayers and his wife) as a person who could eventually get elected to high office and was groomed for that.

    Becoming a community organizer, writing his autobiography (and maybe he DIDN’T write it himself), networking in Rev. Wright’s church, probably being advised to vote present in all those state senate and even USA Senate votes so he wouldn’t have to defend any of his extreme positions, etc. all make me very suspicious.

    This “composite girl friend” deal sounds to me like more of the same.

  20. One of the girlfriends perceived that she would be dumped for a future black girlfriend as Barry moved to establish is “Black” identity. Despite the lit school style she was pretty perceptive. Compare to Clarence Thomas who was raised speaking Gullah (no need to establish a “Black” identity) but married a white girl. Barack needed not only a trophy wife but one for racial purposes as well. What a maroon!

    and Obama came from a Liberated Feminist multicultural basis.

  24. CRUDITY ALERT: If one of his girlfriends was a composite of several individuals, then we know that at least one of them had a vagina. The rumors which float around Chicago of Obama’s bisexuality remain, neither refuted nor confirmed.

    I think that Obama’s biographies are ghostwritten, which isn’t unusual. However, that means that one cannot assume that his writing demonstrates his sexual bent. Since we can assume that he approved the writing before publication, we can assume that Obama’s political viewpoints are represented,

  26. Sharkjumper: you’re correct. I didn’t say exactly what I meant; the fuller thought would have been: as a young man, he certainly had sexual relationships with women. Because lots of people were citing the lack of evidence of that as evidence that Obama was gay, and that Michelle was just a marriage of convenience. Of course, however, relationships with women don’t preclude being bisexual.

    My personal opinion, though, for what it’s worth (which is about zero, since I’m not privy to Obama’s sexual preferences) is that Obama is a person of fairly low sexual drive but that he’s heterosexual. His predominant emotional makeup is cool and removed. And these writings of the girlfriends, and his supposed love letters (which I said in the post should probably more rightly be called “correspondence” than “love letters”) bear that impression out very strongly.

    But then you could compare Obama with just about any other candidate or any previous president at just about any age and find him coming up wanting. The only really impressive thing he has ever done is to fool most of the people some of the time. People need to vote anti-stupid this time.
