…while looking nicely coiffed and wearing tasteful makeup.
And yet I’m not going to hit her for hypocrisy. Hillary Clinton is now sixty-four years old, and although she’s no glamour puss, she looks perfectly fine for her age. Every now and then there’s an unflattering photo of her; so what? My ratio of unflattering to flattering photos is about 100 to 1 these days, and I’m not being constantly followed by photographers salivating to catch me in at my worst, like Hillary is.
What’s more, Hillary never really cared about style. She just pretended to in order to further Bill’s career, and then her own. And whatever happened to cool their marriage over the years (and it was plenty), I’m of the mind that at least in the beginning there was some basic heterosexual sexual chemistry.
Many many people have disagreed with me about that, but I offer exhibits A and B:

This hoopla started in the UK papers (at least the Daily Mail) a couple of days ago. She looked like she was in college again with glasses, straight flat hair, and no make-up. She looked ragged, but very similar to some of her rougher college photos. I think it had to do with her heavy travel schedule.
While I always disliked HRC, I thought that the criticism was overboard. But, the UK papers thrive on that type of coverage.
She may not care about hair and makeup, but I wish she cared about my eyes.
Slovenly; unprofessional; not the way I want my country represented overseas.

Speaking as an old fogy, Hillary would be advised to shorten her hair. Long hair does not look good on older people- men or women.
Gringo: remember my post on that very subject? The gist of it is that all else being equal, I think longish hair is fine on “mature” women (I’ve got longish hair myself) but very long hair is very difficult to pull off past a certain age.
Actually, I think that with Hillary’s face shape her hair looks best sort of shortish but not too short, even when she was First Lady.

Gray: I agree that she needs to look professional and well-groomed, but to me she almost always looks that way, with just a couple of exceptions. And she looks that way to me in the video.
How do Hillary’s looks differ from those of Jeane Kirkpatrick, for example? Or Madeleine Albright? Is it just because Hillary’s hair is somewhat longer? Or because she weighs a few pounds more (than Kirkpatrick, not Albright)? Or because she dispensed with her contacts once or twice and wore glasses? I don’t exactly get it.
I think it might be because she first came into the public eye when she was 44, and because she hasn’t had major procedures (she probably had some Botox along the way during the 2008 campaign, but I don’t think she does that any more). People got used to her looking a certain way as First Lady and now she looks 20 years older. The difference between 44 and 64 can be profound.
What about John Bolton? Was his hair too long to be professional? Should he have had his unruly eyebrows tamed? What about his white walrus ‘stache? And should he have worn contacts?

heck… i also remember when a very famous dj got so drunk he passed out while on cocaine… we could have destroed his career, and so on… we cleaned him up, put him under us, loaded him into his car with his aide… threw him in bed… next day he came to see me and say thanks…

Artfldgr: I certainly didn’t mean to suggest that all, or even most photographers are looking for terrible shots of Hillary.
But some of them are, and those photos sell, and the editors certainly seem to like them. And they are not hard to take, especially when a person isn’t 20 years old any more.
Nor do I think that Hillary, or most celebrities, hate or even dislike photographers. Photographers are very important to their celebrity.
Neo, I didn’t remember your post on hair, but upon going to it I agree with you that Helen Mirren’s length is about right. Long hair on Mia Farrow looks ghastly.
There are exceptions to the long hair “rule.” A cousin my age, who has always been very good looking, pulls off long hair and being sixty-something. The reason is that she gets a lot of exercise from going up and down her third story SoHo walkup, and as a result looks 15 years younger. Maybe when she is 75 and looks 60, she should shorten her hair. Her hair is still dark.
Hair color may also make a difference. A friend of mine from high school now has gray hair- not surprising considering our age. It is long and wavy to curly- and she looks great. But neither her face nor her age are as old as Mia Farrow’s. She had red hair from her northern Italian mother, and when younger didn’t look that Italian to me. But now with gray hair, she reminds me of an older Sophia Loren.

I am in the minority among those I know, but I do think that there was love and respect between them. In one moment I think he even did a little fanny pat, as many husbands do. I was surprised it was not commented on. It happened during his first term, before the big scandals. I think they probably respect each other in some way, even now. Love in the romantic sense, probably not any more. We need to remember we never really know someone else’s life or marriage.
In these wedding photos they resemble each other which doesn’t usually happen until many years together.
Her arm around his shoulder would suggest a “best friends” feeling for each other, I think, according to people who study body language.
It seems clear they loved each other–or thought they did then. I’m at an age where looking at young photos like this makes me sad. You know their future and how their story will unfold. I’m sure they hoped for better things on that day.

But I disagree somewhat about the possible significance of Hillary’s arm around Bill. I think she was quite besotted with him at the time, and yet knew (or strongly sensed) that he had a way with the ladies. Not that he’d necessarily been unfaithful yet within their marriage (after all, it was their wedding day, and that would be a bit of a challenge even for Bill), but he had that roguish quality. She is laying a propriety hand on him (for all the good it ended up doing her). He really was quite the charmer then, wasn’t he?

Actually, for the first time, and due to those photos (I don’t pay a lot of attention), I think I understand the attraction. The physical attraction.
She was …fine …pretty, even, (and we already knew she was sharp as a tack, and hard-working).
I’m sure my fundamentalist conservative cred’ was damaged right there, lol, but I ain’t blind, and I dimlay recall being that young.

Regarding long hair on women of a certain age – Jacqueline Onassis had long hair during her older years, from the time she left Georgetown until she died. Nearly everyone thought her a classy lady. Her long hair, sometimes pulled back with a scarf, or held back by her iconic sunglasses, was thick and beautiful. (I didn’t have much respect for her marrying Onassis, but, what the heck. Neither did Maria Callas.)

I think a woman has to go with a style that works for her, and not all women want or enjoy being super groomed (make-up, dressy clothes, jewelry, etc.).
However, the drastic change in Hilllary’s appearance seems to indicate that something else is going on – like she’s given up trying. This is a concern given her job representing the US. How are/will her counterparts in other countries read this lack of interest in her appearance? It’s not like we don’t know how good she can look when she tries (see her 1st Senate campaign). There are a lot of jobs where appearance doesn’t matter – Sec. of State is not one of them.

I don’t require much more in a Secretary of State or a UN Rep than that he/she dresses and combs his/her hair in some acceptable and conventional way and then show up to work and act intelligent.
Libby: I think the only thing Hillary gave up is Botox and frantic dieting. And every now and then she doesn’t wear her contacts (my guess is that perhaps as she’s gotten older she finds they sometimes irritate her eyes). And I agree that she should wear her hair a bit shorter, because it’s more flattering to her. But the rest is just normal aging, IMHO, which can often accelerate once the 50s are over.

I met Hillary at a garden party more than 30 years ago, and I thought she was attractive in a kind of Wellesley way. I was 19 and just back from college. Bill was not pleased.

I am sorry, but that long hair looks so dumpy, wishy washy and dowdy. I think when you are in the public eye, representing a country, you should be presentable. That long hair looks silly, she should have a shorter cut. If she wants the long look, ABOVE the shoulder still gives a sexy swish yet looks confident and mature. Long hair like hers works on the bohemian type-definitely not her! I love her, I just wish she hadn’t given up.
