Tired? — 20 Comments

  1. I bet she speaks for far more people than Obama’s latest children’s choir who are blaming their parents.

  2. I live in PA, just a few miles from the OH border, and I can relate. No one in the house answers the phone anymore, and watching TV or listening to the radio has become unbearable.

I offered to volunteer for the Romney campaign, but they wanted me to knock on doors and make phone calls. I declined because those things only annoy most people.

  3. I find myself suddenly reminded of the 1988 presidential election, when my daughter was just short of two years old.

Never mind that I detested Dukakis, but it was a name that stuck in her little mind, evidently more memorable than a name so mundane as “Bush”. One evening she bounded about, shouting,

    “Michael Go-Kakis; Michael Go-Kakis”!

Sigh — twenty-six and gorgeous now.

  4. This child has been abused. She has been subjected to stress beyond her understanding by a misguided individual(s), probably a parent or parents. Shame on those who filled her young mind with ideas/opinions that she lacks the experience to process. Responsible parents shield their young children, not expose them to conflicts that only (some) adults can process in a healthy, balanced manner.

This is not funny. Her parents need a vigorous spanking with a thick belt.

  5. Parker,

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Children don’t just start crying for no reason and this one certainly isn’t old enough to know what’s going on. She also isn’t old enough to feel the tension in the country surround elections. What she is able to feel is the tension and anger in her parent/parents and it’s scaring her. Instead of calming her and making her feel safe, this wound of a person in her life filmed her and posted her hurt for the world to see, as if it was something funny.

  6. “Instead of calming her and making her feel safe, this wound of a person in her life filmed her and posted her hurt for the world to see, as if it was something funny.”

I agree Ken, how twisted to film her and post it. Shame, shame, shame upon those who did this. May their bones rot from the inside out.

  7. Oh relax folks. This is hardly a Dr Spock moment. They appear to be in a parking lot and could very well just be leaving a political rally of some sort. As a parent with a young daughter myself I’ve got no problem with this. There’s nothing wrong with taking them with you out and about and there is noting at all unusual about kids that age getting tired, cranky and latching on to whatever is handy and a complaint.

  8. I agree with Steve Ducharme. The parent might even have listened to the radio in the car and the child got tired of hearing the news. Kids of that age can get cranky very easily if tired. I think you’re reading FAR too much into it.

  9. “This is hardly a Dr Spock moment.”

I rarely curse, but this is not about goddamn mother fucking Dr. Spock or limp wristed bitch boychild Bronco Bamma.

“… there is noting at all unusual about kids that age getting tired, cranky and latching on to whatever is handy and a complaint.”

Take a deep breath and think about your comment. This child, according to you is a child genius rivaling Artfldgr, 1 in 100,000, with a very sophisticated political awareness. Otherwise it is highly unlikely she would latch onto, cranky or lucid, the political nuances of Bronco Bamma versus Mitt Romney.

“The parent might even have listened to the radio in the car and the child got tired of hearing the news.”

Abby is 5, maybe 6. She does not pay attention to news on the radio unless directed by an adult, let alone pay attention to mentions of Bronco Bamma or Mitt Romney. She is too young to understand what she hears on the news, even if she is paying attention, much less become upset about what she hears. She pays attention to her parents, I repeat, she pays attention to her parents. She has been manipulated, filmed, and posted for all the world to comment upon and exploit. This not a Dr. Spock moment. It is manipulation.

AND, why would a responsible parent or guardian film this child (cranky, tired, irritated, etc.) and post this on the internet? This is not cute or funny or a Dr. Spock moment. It is gross manipulation of the emotions of a child too young to understand why she has been manipulated.

Sleep tight Abby and forget about Bronco Bamma, he is just another Baba Yaga that eats dirt.

  10. parker: I strongly disagree. Many kids of that age are affected by what’s on the news (or by boredom, if the news is droning on and on about something). I certainly was at that age. I remember very distinctly picking up on news by the time I was three years old, and can remember incidents connected with hearing things on the news and reacting to them.

Not all children do this, of course, or perhaps not even most. But many do; some kids are a lot more aware than others, or than we perceive. And I assure you my parents were NOT directing me to pay a particle of attention to the news.

Whether or not her parents should post her reaction on YouTube is a separate issue.

  11. >>> Sigh – twenty-six and gorgeous now.

And a Conservative, we hope :^D

  12. My own reaction to “the news” was twofold…

    A) It meant there was nothing on TV at 6:00-7:00, both because there wasn’t anything BUT news in those days on all THREE networks.

    B) My Grandfather always watched NBC news at the time. So even IF one of the other channels had anything, it would still be on the news.

For events, I was equally annoyed. Some damned idiot news program *I* didn’t care about was preventing me from watching MY shows!!! (shaking fist) Those bastards!!

    😀

I stopped trusting “the news” mostly by the time I was old enough to really care… I’d seen at least two different 60 minutes segments that dealt with things I had more than the typical public’s level of understanding of, and saw the amount of absolute crap that was foist off as “reporting”… obvious questions not asked, presumptions unstated… It made me ask questions about ALL news shows, and I found them mostly wanting.

And not tooooo much later I realized two things:
    1) 99% of the “news” either didn’t affect me, was completely ephemeral and irrelevant beyond a day or two, or both

    2) If it DID affect me or WAS somehow relevant, I didn’t really have much control over it, so knowing of it made little difference.

  13. neo,

I apologize for using profanity, my comment last night was over wrought. But, while you at age 5 may have paid attention to the ‘news’, did you feel intense emotional stress over political conflicts? A vast majority of young children do not have a clue about who is POTUS or even that there is such a thing as POTUS. And, they are, or at least should be, unaware of the often nasty nature of political campaigns.

I have a lot hands on experience with young children as a father, an uncle, a grandfather, a martial arts instructor, and for the last 8 years as a tutor and mentor in an elementary school. Children the age of Abby do not pay attention to Chris Matthews, John Stewart, Rush, or Glen Beck. Abby’s head has been filled with conflict and stress she did not seek out.

However, I respect your take on Abby’s emotional distress over Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney; although I find it highly unusual that a child this young pays attention to politics without parental influence, let alone break out in tears over Bronco Bamma.

Interestingly, tt now turns out that Abby is 4 and was ‘exposed’ by NPR. That should tell everyone something about this sad affair.

Again, I apologize for my language.

  14. Parker: I accept your apology, but I also want you to note that I said in my earlier comment that I noticed the news when I was as young as three years old, younger than this child. I certainly didn’t understand it at a high level at that point, but I noticed it and grasped the basics. And at four I definitely knew who was president.

Note also that, just as I guessed yesterday, the little girl in the video was apparently listening along when her mother was listening to a program on the radio in the car (according to that video you linked). Her head wasn’t being “filled with conflict and stress she did not seek out,” unless you think that a parent turning on the news in the car is some sort of terrible thing for a child to hear.

Some kids will pay attention to this sort of thing; some will not. Some will be bothered, some couldn’t care less. This kid was probably mostly bored by the constant drone, and she may also have been tired and cranky at that moment for reasons having nothing to do with politics or the radio or Bronco Bama or Mitt Romney.
