Richard Burton on his father and coal mining

Speaking of Burton (and we were), here’s Burton speaking.

I defy you to not find this story fascinating (the part I’m talking about begins where I’ve cued the tape up, at 12:29, and ends around 16:15):

“The arrogant strut of the lords of the coal face…”

What a great clip. Simply great!

    Thanks for that.

  2. carl in atlanta Says:

” They were kings of the underworld…”

God, how I envy those Brits who have mastered the English language (and he’s Welsh, not “really” an Englishman!).

  3. vanderleun Says:

And of course we shouldn’t forget the greatest film epic of Wales, How Green Was My Valley.

Not only a great epic but one that had one of the most tear-jerking endings of all time:

  4. vanderleun Says:

” Men like my father cannot die. They are with me still, real in memory as they were in flesh, loving and beloved forever. How green was my valley then. “

Thanks for finding and sharing. I’ve been a big Burton fan since childhood, and that was a long time ago. This was very illuminating.

  6. Don Carlos Says:

What a marvellous yet deeply flawed man.
