“In New York we have rats the size of chihuahuas” — 9 Comments

  1. Topical? I’ll say. The last time I was in New York they were loose in the subways over at Cobble Hill.

  2. (chuckle)

“Chihuahua” describes the ^size^ of the critter, but said critter is still a ^rat^!

Besides, in Noo Yawk, ya nevah know what’s gonna be taken as an insult!

  3. As a NYer, knowledge of a crawl space under the platform that’s roomy enough for 3 grown men, including an unconscious man, is difference-making knowledge, either being the faller or a good samaritan. I wonder whether the crawl spaces are still there (they should be, but who knows what’s been added into the space since the program) and whether all stations have it.

  4. Ditto what Eric said. Also, the information that the trains’ undercarriages can also electrocute you is vital. I know the Third Rail is on the side of the trains away from the platforms, and you can step over it using the top rail; also, some stations have man-sized niches in the far walls away from the platforms that you can back into if a train comes in, but I didn’t know about the crawl space either.

I don’t remember this incident; I was in NYC at the time. Probably didn’t see the TV news that day.
