There’s a big discussion in this yahoo article about who invented the moonwalk, and the answer isn’t Michael Jackson.

I can’t say I much care, although I always thought Jackson’s dance moves were his greatest talent. But the article included this amazing video of Cab Calloway that I’d never seen before, although I’m familiar with Calloway’s singing:

Wow, just wow.

And here’s another video from the article that has a lot of proto-moonwalking on it. But I still think that of all the segments, Calloway’s is the most idiosyncratically impressive:

Cab was a genius in more than one way.

  2. vanderleun Says:

And Jackson was not a genius in more ways than one.

  3. James Says:

Oh, I do love my Cab Calloway.

  4. Ann Says:

When Jackson started the crotch-grabbing thing I had to avert my eyes. Was that his innovation, by the way? Or did it have an “illustrious” patrimony, as well?

  5. Beverly Says:

Cab was some Crazy Dancer. I remember seeing (when I was a tyke!) a Max Fleischer cartoon of “Minnie the Moocher,” starring a rubber-legged Cab and Bettie Boop.

Y’all will enjoy this: Martin & Lewis in a tap dance duel with the Stepp Brothers. Watch to the end — most people don’t know that Jerry Lewis was a really good dancer.

  6. Gary Rosen Says:

    Two words: Nicholas Brothers

Wow!! Was that Cab in the first clip of the white suit? Who was the chef? That was unbelievable.

It’s a pity that so much of our modern dance (in terms of rock/pop stars) is just hypersexualized thrusting and the like.
