Mug me again!
Here’s a story for you:
Last year when liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer was robbed, the New York Post editorial page used it to recall one of the late Ed Koch’s favorite anecdotes:
Back when he was first running for mayor, Ed Koch used to tell of the time he told some senior citizens about a judge he knew who’d been mugged.
The judge, said Koch, told a group that “this mugging will not influence any of my decisions from the bench” ”” whereupon a woman yelled, “Mug him again!”
While the Post was roundly criticized in some quarters for insensitivity, the lesson was apt. Those who can’t learn from their encounters with violent criminals lack credibility when they render judgment on dealing with related issues.
This anecdote came to mind when reading of the encounter of leftist Israeli filmmaker Yariv Horowitz”“who was in Aubagne, France to pick up an award at a film festival for his film Rock the Casbah”“had with a gang of Arab toughs. Though his movie is a cinematic attack on Israeli policies and a bouquet thrown in the direction of the Palestinians, the Arabs proved to be uninterested in his politics and instead subjected him to the same treatment they have accorded to many another Jew: he was badly beaten.
But like the judge in the Ed Koch story, Horowitz won’t let it influence him. When he regained consciousness, he refused to press charges against his attackers. Nor did he draw any conclusions about the intent of the mob that beat him up.
That immediately brought mind the story of Robert Fisk, whom you may fondly remember as the guy after whom the verb “to fisk” was named.
Here’s why (an article Fisk wrote about the time he was attacked by an Afghan mob):
They started by shaking hands. We said “Salaam aleikum” ”“ peace be upon you ”“ then the first pebbles flew past my face. A small boy tried to grab my bag. Then another. Then someone punched me in the back. Then young men broke my glasses, began smashing stones into my face and head. I couldn’t see for the blood pouring down my forehead and swamping my eyes. And even then, I understood. I couldn’t blame them for what they were doing. In fact, if I were the Afghan refugees of Kila Abdullah, close to the Afghan-Pakistan border, I would have done just the same to Robert Fisk. Or any other Westerner I could find.

There’s nothing wrong with being able to understand. But there is something wrong with allowing their perspective to negate your own, to the point of not fighting it.
There’s a deep self-loathing that comes with not thinking your own perspective has enough value to be worth defending. I wonder if that condition isn’t totally inseparable from the ultimate arrogance: thinking your perspective is so beyond culture that it is no longer a perspective at all.

My only regret about Fisk was that he was just beaten instead of beheaded.

Geoffrey Britain’s post at the following link exposes how the absurd Marxist strategy of fisking is institutionalizing white guilt. In essence, when a student or a whole class of students fail, it’s because the teacher failed to communicate because he was limited by his “whiteness.”

Reminds me of the Code Pinkos that partner with Hamas and other Muslim radicals to protest against Israel. Why not, as I have said several times, just offer your information without the insults and the assumptions about what people care about and don’t care about, and know and don’t know?

From my experience in teaching at a minority and poverty school, I would say that there IS some truth to that assertion. Blacks tend to have a more confrontational, a more in-your-face kind of communication style than whites do. When many black students see the more mild mannered communication style of a white, they see this as a signal that this teacher can be played. And in my case, they were correct.
I had a problematic student whose mother was a teacher’s aide in another school. He once made the remark that his mother was a lot harder on problem students than I was.
[He flunked my class. There was pressure from the principal to pass as many students as possible, but from my experience, students tend to work and behave better when they get at least one failing grade. If I had to do it over again, I would have handed out more failing grades in the beginning of the year. Like the old line about the farmer hitting a mule on the side of the head to get its attention. No, I am not advocating actual physical abuse.]
This does not mean that all black teachers succeed with black/minority students with a confrontational style. A teacher on my team had nearly 40 years of teaching experience. She was mild-mannered, but she knew which buttons to push to make her students behave.

One time artfldgr included a reference to a work by C. Wright Mills. Because I wasn’t sure why he referred to Mills, I asked him why he did so. artfldgr’s response was to give a lengthy explanation about Mills, with the underlying assumption that I didn’t know jack about C. Wright Mills. I replied that I had several of his books on my shelves. Moreover, family friends had known C. Wright Mills from his grad school days, long before he was prominent in his profession. Courtesy of my family friends, by the age of 18 I had read my first C. Wright Mills book- his propaganda screed Listen Yankee in support of Fidel Castro. Which is why I don’t have a high opinion of C. Wright Mills.
…at the risk of not piling on (and in recognition of my personal idiosyncratic conversational quirks lol), I just chalk it up to artfldgr’s style, and read past the sometimes hyperbolic “tone” if you will (tone on the ‘net is hard to communicate well-or-at-all, and easy to misinterpret).
He does present an interesting perspective at times, and includes a wealth of obscure stuff – often with links – that are interesting in-and-of-themselves. Especially on rainy afternoons.

Your article eats at me, hard. I did survive my youth, I didn’t live it. I learned hard things, bitter things, and how to still be me without succumbing one way or another. And for that reason, I hated appeasers and ‘bleeding hearts’ for the longest time. More often than not they sided with bullies, even groups of them, against those they sought to victimize. Especially when one such as I would not kneel, yield, surrender.
I surrendered the hate, but not the disrespect, distaste. Peace is not worth surrender. Compassion for the warped should not supersede justice. Personal and business associations, and preferences, should not be above what is right. I wondered though, how many who seemed to be justifying evildoers had merely surrendered to it? I suppose I will never know. Have you seen the “gays for sharia law” group? Yeah, that’s going to work out well.
I have, pretty much, given up on America. Mostly because from what I can tell, America has given up on itself. I can, and will, fight. I won’t kneel. I won’t just surrender. But I also won’t go against the mob, not directly, not alone. I’ll merely slip away and let the mob eat itself. I just hope I can heal in time to sneak out the back door and let the cannibalism that is coming destroy only the cannibals… and those who have engendered the behavior. I have no interest in being mugged again, again, again. Nor can I kill that many. Nor would I. If it comes to that, this is no longer my home and yet just because I am Rome, I will not do, always, as the Romans do.
