Big politically correct Brother

Mark Steyn; read it.

Along the way he points out that he wrote back in November of 2001:

The bigger you make the government, the more you entrust to it, the more powers you give it to nose around the citizenry’s bank accounts, and phone calls, and e-mails, and favorite Internet porn sites, the more you’ll enfeeble it with the siren song of the soft target. The Mounties will no longer get their man, they’ll get you instead. Frankly, it’s a lot easier.

Give that man the prescience award.

Or as David Burge put it in 140 characters or less:

Govt has to scrape all your phone calls and emails because govt forgot to enforce immigration law on 20 expired visas in 2001.

  2. Geoffrey Britain Says:

The inimitable Mark Steyn, what a treasure.

So, how long till the weapons, such as surface-to-air missiles, provided to al Qaeda by our support for the overthrow of Qaddafi and now Assad will be used to bring down American airliners?

That will bring a halt to basically all air traffic and a renewal of economic depression.

Does the Obama administration realize (or care) that it is living on borrowed time? The liberal world view of ‘fairness for all’ and ‘multicultural equivalency’ is based in the racial white guilt and moral cowardice that in turn gives rise to their appeasement mind-set.

However, when American airliners start exploding (impossible to stop shoulder fired surface-to-air missiles) and falling from the sky with hundreds dead, what shall the administration say?

That gee, al Qaeda is not defeated after all? That we don’t negotiate with terrorists? That we’ll never yield to terrorism but that for the foreseeable future all air travel is suspended?

Liberals are going to subconsciously KNOW that their ‘chickens’ have quite literally come home to roost and they are going to turn to Obama and DEMAND that he protect them.

Panicked pacifist rage will result when he can’t get the job done, for when the rubber meets the road, “the man who would be king” must deliver or face being thrown under the proverbial bus.

Nothing is as disappointing as a fallen idol.

  3. rickl Says:

About a week after 9/11, I predicted that because of political correctness and antidiscrimination laws, the government would end up treating each and every American citizen as a potential terrorist.

It gives me no pleasure to have been proven right about that.

  4. Ed Bonderenka Says:

There are those congresscritters who said that Snowden should have come to them.
What would they have done, even if they agreed with him (as Sensenbrenner indicates)?
Snowden going to ANYONE (even congress) violated the rules.
And if a sympathetic congresscritter agreed with him, the only route left would still be exposure to the public, because the oversight committees had already approved the activity.
Making the oversight committees a shadow government.
If the Patriot Act is more limited than the oversight committees approved activity as Sensenbrenner (it’s author) believes, then the real authority is the oversight committee, and who in their ranks would expose it?
I had this conversation on the Bill Bennett show yesterday.

  5. Don Carlos Says:

    G.B. says, in part:
“Liberals are going to subconsciously KNOW that their ‘chickens’ have quite literally come home to roost and they are going to turn to Obama and DEMAND that he protect them.”
    And I say:
Of course. Just what the Left wants. More security, and to heck with liberty.
Just look at the TSA and what it puts flyers through. Which is why I no longer fly. I know it came from GWB; so what? If one tags one’s self as a “compassionate” government type, one is a Leftist.

  6. Ymarsakar Says:

GWB was originally against Homeland security, but was convinced or pressured into it. People have been made to forget. Given the state of DC and who his advisors were… that may not have been all that surprising. The TSA was a natural outgrowth of union expansion.

People like to think Leftist power expands because the “leader” in charge is behind it. Leftist power expands because you and everyone else here needs to take breath. It grows always and cannot be stopped by any such weak motivation as “democracy” or “politics”.

When terrorists attack again successfully. The blame will rest on right wing militia and bitter gun clingers. They will raid your houses and do to you what they did at WACO. Your names will be disappeared along a mass of graves. Nobody will care then. They will only look out for themselves.

  7. J.J. formerly Jimmy J. Says:

    Two things.
    !. Name the enemy.
    2. Profile for the enemy.

    All else is theater.

  8. Ymarsakar Says:

The enemy is the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Composed of Tea Party, Sarah Palins, Joe Plumbers, and any other person trying to get the Truth and Vote out.

They will be profiled and scheduled for processing.

  9. Geoffrey Britain Says:

    Don Carlos,

If ‘more security’ and less freedoms doesn’t stop al Qaeda from blowing up airliners and it won’t, then Obama will NOT be meeting liberal demands.

It’s going to be a bit difficult to blame missiles exploding airliners on “right wing militia and bitter gun clingers” when al Qaeda takes responsibility and gloats.

And they can’t raid hundreds of thousands of homes and do to millions, what they did at WACO or they lose all credibility with the military and then, it’s over.

Their plans are more subtle than that.

  10. parker Says:

I remember thinking when DHS and the TSA were created that these agencies would become ever more powerful and intrusive with time. Now, DHS has become an insatiable behemoth poking its fingers into every function of the executive branch.

    JJ formerly,

Yes, it is rather simple and all else is misdirection in order to create the surveillance state.

    “When terrorists attack again successfully.”

They already have: Ft. Hood and Boston.

  11. expat Says:

Did you all read that 47 of the Senators did not bother attending the confidential session yesterday on the NSA. I certainly hope that their constituents ask why they weren’t concerned about this issue. I didn’t see a party breakdown of non-attendants.

  12. Geoffrey Britain Says:

A party breakdown of non-attendants is not needed. The Republican leadership is firmly on board the Obama express. From Boehner’s “Snowden’s a traitor!”, to Graham’s “I’m glad!” not one Republican ‘leader’ has expressed outrage.

  13. Ed Bonderenka Says:

“Now, DHS has become an insatiable behemoth poking its fingers into every function…”
Why are DHS warnings next to the FBI warnigs on DVDs now?

  14. Ymarsakar Says:

It’s relatively easy to frame right wingers with terrorism and racism charges. It’s not going to be any harder for them to say that Republicans are allied with Islamic Jihad and both are full of religious fundamentalism.

After all, the Left is always the first to say you are doing the crimes against humanity the Left themselves did first.

  15. Geoffrey Britain Says:

No doubt some leftists will claim that Republicans are allied with Islamic Jihad, as you’re correct in them always projecting their sins upon those opposed to their rationale and policies.

That ‘dog won’t hunt’ however. At least 85% of those on the right self-identify as Christians and Christians haven’t engaged in widespread terrorism since the end of the inquisition in the 14th century.

The racism charge can be neutralized by Republicans and conservatives forthrightly responding with, ‘we don’t care what the color of your skin is, we do care which cultural values you embrace’. That’s an argument we need to have because the failure of immigrants to assimilate both legal and illegal is directly related to the cultural values they embrace.

  16. parker Says:

“Why are DHS warnings next to the FBI warnigs on DVDs now?”

Because DHS is the big dog now and it has to share in the ‘authoritarian limelight’ with every other fed enforcement agency. DHS has absorbed numerous agencies and has agents in thousands of cities and towns. It is literally here, there, and everywhere. It has about 200,000 employees. By comparison the FBI has somewhere around 30,000.

Have no fear, NSA & DHS watch over everything, keeping us safe and free from all harm.

  17. Ymarsakar Says:

GB, one of the things the Left uses to keep minorities under control is to commit crimes against them, disenfranchise them, and destroy their economic income. Then direct the hate against Republicans for it.

Same thing vis a vis slavery.

So they can make it convincing, certainly more convincing than patriots had with gun rights in inner black neighborhoods, merely by offloading all their sins on their enemies. ANd people will believe it.

A lot of people were working on fixing the problems, like the Tea Party, that they saw in front of them: government corruption or political inefficiencies. I didn’t think their efforts would succeed. Not because I thought it was not a worthy cause or that the membership were incompetent or lax, but merely because all that the Left touches they destroy. And the blame never sticks to Leftist members, but always to their enemies. So until people get rid of the Left, the Left keeps on being a parasite.

All the good things that are done, are attributed to them. All the evil things that they do, they use to destroy their enemies with by putting the responsibility on them.

  18. dicentra Says:

Now, DHS has become an insatiable behemoth poking its fingers into every function…

How do I erase THAT infelicitous image from my mind?

  19. parker Says:

He may be viewed as radical, but he makes sense to me. Read Leverage; its nothing more than 4th grade math.

    “I heard it was you
    Talkin’ ’bout a world
    Where all is free
    It just couldn’t be
And only a fool would say that.”

    Steely Dan

  20. SteveH Says:

It strikes me that the leftist wanting to blame all terrorism at its core on conservatism is just a repeat of a dynamic we are all familiar with. The teenager who blames his parents for everything not being perfect in his world.

Every woe we face as a nation is traceable to an uncanny lack of maturity in our so called grownups.

  21. Mike Says:

Who still thinks we have not been defeated by a long, slow coup since the 1970’s?

Kruschev and Breshnev are celebrating in Hell.

About Me

Previously a lifelong Democrat, born in New York and living in New England, surrounded by liberals on all sides, I've found myself slowly but surely leaving the fold and becoming that dread thing: a neocon.
