Obama oversteps the Constitution more than Nixon? — 26 Comments

  1. “the American people know less and less about what the Constitution says or how it might be designed to protect them.”

All too true and dangerous for those of us who want to live by the rule of law.

  2. Obama does not see himself as overstepping the Constitution since relative to himself, there is no Constitution to step over.

It is hardly even a word. He’d only notice it at all if the treasonous and tyrannical Roberts had somehow displayed courage a year or so ago.

Constitution? I don’t think he does more than laugh it off if it ever even enter his mind.

Obama is not the main issue. He is a dime a dozen evil narcissist who has power. He is the American Napoleon except he has an Army of Bureaucrats and not horses and men. This is more and more clear. The main issue is whether we have quorum of Americans in this Country…or not.

Right now, it appears perhaps not. A close call. If we have enough Americans we will take that which is our birthright – The Constitution – and enforce it our own selves.

Barring that we shall be serfs and slaves as we are presently being conditioned to be.

  3. What’s interesting about the media’s loathing of Nixon was that, all in all, he was a statist. Some of the things he did have been extremely damaging to this country. The Endangered Species Act and the EPA have proved to be tools for the environmental whackos to use to obstruct manufacturing and energy development in this country.

He also had victory in Vietnam in his grasp in December of 1972 when Operation Linebacker II was carried out. B-52s did saturation bombing of North Vietnam that was highly effective while the port of Haiphong was mined to prevent supply ships from entering. By 12/29 the North Vietnamese had very few SAMs left and were short of anti-aircraft ammo. Had Nixon pressed the offensive, the north Vietnamese would have been forced to sue for real peace. Instead the North Vietnamese quickly agreed to sign the relatively toothless Paris Peace Accords.

According to wiki: “On 9 January Kissinger and Le Duc Tho returned to Paris. The agreement struck between the U.S. and North Vietnam was basically the same one that had been reached in October. The additional demands that had been made by the U.S. in December were generally discarded or went against the U.S. John Negroponte, one of Kissinger’s aides during the negotiations, was more caustic: “We bombed the North Vietnamese into accepting our concessions.”[75] The DMZ was defined as provided for in the Geneva Accords of 1954, and would in no way be recognized as an international boundary. The demanded withdrawal of North Vietnamese troops from South Vietnam was not mentioned at all in the text of the agreement. Kissinger did, however, obtain a “verbal agreement” from Tho for a token withdrawal of 30,000 North Vietnamese troops.[76]

The demand for an inclusive, Indochina-wide cease-fire was simply discarded in the written agreement. Once again, Kissinger had to be satisfied with a “verbal understanding” that a cease-fire would be instituted in Laos simultaneous with, or shortly following, that in South Vietnam.[77] An agreement on Cambodia (where the North Vietnamese had no influence whatsoever over the Khmer Rouge) was out of the question. The size of the ICCS was finally decided by splitting the difference in the number demanded by both parties at 1,160 personnel.[78] The Paris Peace Accords were signed at the Majestic Hotel in Paris on 27 January 1973.[79]”

My guess is that Nixon’s role in the outing of Alger Hiss as a communist was what won him lasting hatred from the MSM. It should have been a warning to all thoughtful Americans.

  4. “. . . when Nixon was around the press noticed and acted as a check on him.”

As I’ve written on this site before:

Force the media to do its job. Vote Republican.

  5. JJ formerly,

I agree, Nixon was not a conservative. Many of us remember him as a big government statist, not a friend to the idea of a small DC restricted by the fences of the Constitution.

  6. I read a very depressing post by Donald Sensing earlier today.

Why the law does not matter to Obama

Depressing, but not surprising to many of us. Certainly not to me.

So, if the checks and balances and the separation of powers have failed, and the Constitution is no longer in force, then the Federal government is no longer legitimate.

What, then, is our recourse? I see none that does not involve killing the tyrants.

  7. Well let’s just pick up from your last post, neo. It’s ok to be sexist if you’re a liberal woman writing for the Washington Post, and it’s ok to violate the constitution if you’re a liberal office holder who is pushing the progressive agenda.

  8. I’m an admirer of the clarity and rigorous logic of Will’s thinking process. I am not an admirer of his unwillingness to state the consequential results of his analysis. In fairness, I suspect that Will’s job depends upon the self-restraint of his criticism.

Someone unafraid to go where Will fears to tread is a gentleman by the name of Donald Sensing, who in a post entitled, “Why the law does not matter to Obama” makes plain where currently America stands and where we are headed.

“so with President Obama and federal courts’ rulings: they have no means of enforcing their rulings. As any intemperate two-year old knows, you can do anything you want until someone compels you to stop. And so Obama can order whatever he wishes until he is compelled to stop.

The courts lack the means of such compulsion. That leaves the Congress to rein in the executive. (Please excuse me while I erupt in peals of derisive laughter.) Congress’s only authority to rein in a president consists of two things: Withhold funding for departments and agencies under executive authority, or Impeach him.

Since those are the only two options available, and since the Congress is controlled by the Democrats (the Republican majority in the House meaning nothing here), neither loss of funding nor impeachment will ever be used to restrain this president.

The goal of the entire Democrat party is to be the permanent, sole political authority in the country. This is the actual transformation that Barack Obama promised to great applause in his 2008 campaign.

Obama can do this not because the Constitution or law authorize it. Most definitely they actually prohibit it. He is getting away with it because there is no one who can stop him and almost no one [with the political power] wants to stop him.

No one, and I mean absolutely no one, in the Democrat party is in the slightest interested in reining in Obama’s expansion of executive diktat because they know what few of the rest of us are awakening to: the Democrats are never going to lose that executive authority again. Let me be clear, with a promise to elucidate another day: there is never going to be another Republican president. Ever. [demographic birth rates, legal immigration (85% third world socialist societies) that vote 79% for democrats and amnesty ensure this]

The media will not examine Obama’s imperialist manner because they do not want to. They agree with it. The courts are literally unable to enforce their rulings contra this administration; Obama ignores them at will and without consequence. The Republicans are dominated by the Political Class and lack the numbers, influence, collective will and ideological conviction to rein in the administration even if they had the ability to do so, which they don’t.

This is a president who knows that he does not need to make anyone “happy,” that there in fact is no political base that must be appeased or pleased — where else will the base go? The president of the United States is now quite literally a dictate-er: he orders what he wishes and implements what he chooses.

There is no check or balance any longer, not even the Congress’s power to control the federal purse. There is no federal purse to control. There are only years-long series of continuing resolutions and special appropriations, all funded with trillions of dollars of borrowed fiat money that no creditor anywhere in the world expects will be repaid. President Obama has a government credit card with no debt limit. The power to spend is the power to control, and that is what he is doing.”

Obama means to entrench the process of fundamentally transforming America into AmeriKa, such that it cannot be undone. That is the legacy he seeks.

  9. But Obama knows he is immune because he is black so he might as well do as he pleases.

    Congress can’t stop him.

  10. ‘So, if the checks and balances and the separation of powers have failed, and the Constitution is no longer in force, then the Federal government is no longer legitimate.

What, then, is our recourse? I see none that does not involve killing the tyrants.” rickl

Nor do I but it is not yet time. The day will come when liberals awaken to the left’s betrayal and the left will betray them. That is when the time will be right because of two conditions; we will be in the clear majority and the left shall have long ago dropped all pretense.

In the meantime, Lincoln offered relevant thought,
“Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.”

Jefferson spoke of our current plight, “Law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so, when it violates the right of an individual.”

“When Injustice becomes Law, Resistance becomes Duty”

“Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”

Lincoln spoke of the moral justification for a majority rebellion, “Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.”

  11. Donald Sensing (Via G.B.):
“……all funded with trillions of dollars of borrowed fiat money that no creditor anywhere in the world expects will be repaid. President Obama has a government credit card with no debt limit. The power to spend is the power to control, and that is what he is doing.”

The important thing to observe is “…….that no creditor anywhere in the world expects will be repaid.” That direction lies his nemesis. I don’t expect it to be sudden, (because oil is priced in dollars) but eventually the creditors will become more demanding. What Congress can’t/won’t do financial reality can.

There is a sense of unease among the American people – not the thoughtless LIVs – but among those who have a sense of responsibility about how they conduct their affairs. They are seeing what is happening and wondering how long we can go on with stagnant wages, part time jobs, overt subversion of wealth building economic activity, the destruction of the health care system, and knowing something has got to give.

Obama’s approval ratings on the economy are at 35%. People know whatever it is he says he’s doing isn’t working. I’m thinking that any candidate that speaks out for repeal of Obamacare and for less government restrictions on the private sector is going to get a fair hearing in 2014. Financial reality may provide a Republican Congress in 2015. And that could bring him up short.

  12. Even if people accepted reality, they won’t know how to fix it. It is beyond their current powers. No matter what people try, the Left will stop them.

No matter who they try to help, the Left will stop them.

No matter who is being saved from certain death, the Left will stop them.

At best, it is a stalemate.

  13. While waiting for the Good Democrats to figure something out, like whose boot is really on their backs, this has the concurrent consequence of allowing Islam to win in the world in the long term.

  14. Sensing: “there is never going to be another Republican president. Ever.”

Me, I’m going to cling to Instapundit’s response: “Of course, you might have said the same thing during the New Deal, and yet Republicans did return to power.”

I’m also not willing at this point to say Hillary is inevitably our next president. She’s got an awfully lot of the dreaded “negatives,” on both a personal and professional level. I think that’s one reason her camp is so busy right now pushing the “the time has come for a woman president” mantra — they need to ingrain that idea in the minds of the least-informed voters who can’t remember the negatives.

  15. “The important thing to observe is “…….that no creditor anywhere in the world expects will be repaid.” That direction lies his nemesis. I don’t expect it to be sudden, (because oil is priced in dollars) but eventually the creditors will become more demanding. What Congress can’t/won’t do financial reality can.” J.J. formerly Jimmy J

That is exactly right but only partially correct. It’s true that reality cannot be denied forever. Reality will consist of the sovereign bankruptcy of the West, which is now mathematically inescapable.

Whenever that happens, the reaction to that will be chaos and riots. The reaction to chaos and riots will be calls for order. In the face of nationwide chaos and riots, nationwide martial law will need to be declared. If the President were any previous President, even Bill Clinton, there would be no problem.

But with Obama or Hillary, we are talking committed leftists and, Obama has shown the way to unrestricted executive power. Neither Obama nor Hillary will let the opportunity presented by crisis ‘go to waste’.

Under either, we can look for the suspension of key provisions of the Constitution… and there is precedent, so plausibility will exist. With a compliant Congress and a hamstrung Supreme Court, the damage and progress the left can attain under such conditions is frightening.

We’d best pray that the 2014 election denies the democrats any substantial gains.

“Obama’s approval ratings on the economy are at 35%.”

That is true, however according to Rasmussen polls, “45% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Obama’s job performance. 59% of likely Democratic voters believe Democrats in Congress have done a good job of representing their party values. 45% of Democrats believe the average congressional Democrat shares their views,”

What these numbers tell us is that Obama’s base is holding up despite all the scandals and without the incessant democrat propaganda during elections.

While in the long run it’s a grim reality liberals face, in the immediate future, it’s a grim reality we face.

  16. The Left can do nothing without the political support of liberals. Islam has no hope whatsoever of dominating and conquering the West. It lacks the logistical resources to do so and the left, which is equally as ruthless, will bring Islam to heel, once its usefulness is at an end.

“Rogue states never turn out to be quite the pariahs they are deemed. They are only able to cause, or at least threaten to cause, mayhem because they enjoy the covert support – usually by means of technology transfers – of one or more major powers within the charmed circle of global ‘good guys’.” Margaret Thatcher

The ‘major powers’ within the charmed circle of global ‘good guys’ to whom Thatcher refers would be Russia, China and the Western left.

  17. Me, I’m going to cling to Instapundit’s response: “Of course, you might have said the same thing during the New Deal, and yet Republicans did return to power.”

And Had not the South flipped from Democrat to Republican?

  18. Ann,

Instapundit’s response and Hillary’s questionable “inevitability” are indeed possibilities but not IMO, probabilities. Everything hinges upon exposure of what actually happened in Benghazi. If Hillary’s involvement in Benghazi is finally exposed, there is hope. Otherwise she’s a shoe-in.

The need to ingrain the mantra/idea that “the time has come for a woman president” in the minds of the least-informed voters who can’t remember the negatives… has already begun. Witness neo’s post, Kathleen Parker: Vote for Hillary!! Save the world! just below this post.

With Comprehensive Amnesty for 11-33 million undocumented democrats just around the corner and refined voter fraud in key swing states districts perfected, the probability of Hillary’s election is a high probability indeed.

  19. GB, I read Parker’s column, so I know the campaign is well under way. And I include her in Hillary’s camp.

  20. Of course, the main reason Republicans were able to return to the White House in 1952 was Eisenhower.

If the Republicans can put up someone in 2016 who can outshine Hillary, I think they’ve got a chance. Largely because, on a purely visceral level, Hillary simply rubs many people the wrong way. And if the Republicans can also reveal her as being incompetent and uncaring with regard to Benghazi, so much the better.

  21. I’m glad you folks posted Sensing’s chilling article.

I do hope he’s wrong. Surely, someday America will cough up the Leftists like a cat hacking up a hairball.

  22. I do not think that Islam intends to conqueor the west by invasion and occupation. Uncontrolled immigration, and superior birth rates, are proving very effective in Europe, and may well in the U.S.

To be very politically incorrect, I could point out that Hispanics, Latinos or whatever the currently accepted term may be, are bragging that they will retake the Southwest using the same strategy. They are well on the way in Southern California.

  23. All this talk about the people rising up. All this talk about rights.

Get real. Get honest. Quit fooling yourselves. It’s unbecoming.

The truth is that the rights come from God via creation. Period, or they are not rights at all.

The truth is that it takes courage to rise up and that only happens when one believes in God; when one believes in something bigger than one’s own self.

America is losing its religion – the very religion that made it such a great place. It will never “rise up” and claim it’s “rights” until it gets its religion back. Period, end of story, blah blah blah to all enlightened rebuttals.

We are Wiley Coyote. We are Rockefeller Heirs who think we made the money when the truth is that we are just living off it and it has run out and is not being replenished. When the truth is we are standing on thin air and only now see the inevitable fall.

Oh right. Some great secular patriot will “rise up”.

    Laugher.

To exercise a right you have to know what one is in the first place. And where one comes from. And what a responsibility is.

There are only thousands of years of answers to the questions, and religious experiences to be had.

But hey, aren’t the Simpsons on tonight?

  24. To heck with Godwin’s Law:
We are in Weimar Germany, with a couple of modifications. 1) We are flushing our own republic, and 2) We have evil already at the helm of state, not merely incompetence, disunity, confusion (which characterize the GOP).
