  1. Silver always looks clean from a few feet away. White and black always look dirty. Especially in the winter when they’re full of road salt. Tha’s why I have a silver car, a pewter car and a grey car. Low maintenance.

  4. My wife and I do our part: We never buy a car that is any shade of gray, silver, black, white, brown or beige.

  5. White car paint is easier to match. I just want to get from here to there, and glamor is more than I can usually afford. If we get a scratch or other minor damage, I can often do the body work my self, and getting the right shade of white from the dealer makes it much easier.

    We did have a purple minivan for eight years or so, which the kids dubbed the “Knight Bus.” (See Rowling, JK, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

  6. I am not obsessed, unsessed, recessed, or desessed about car colors. But silver and cream and white and grey are not good in foggy/rainy areas.

  7. The only reason I might want a slightly different car color is that this might make it easier to find in a parking lot. Otherwise I don’t care. For that matter, I don’t even care about the brand or style. Never have.

  8. Mazda has some cars that are a bright blue color; not quite turquoise, a bit more blue. Very easy to find in the parking lot!

    My car is over 16 years old and still going strong. And I bought it used.

    Today’s cars do not have the character of that two tone beauty. Today, they all look alike to me.

  10. My 1957 Ford Fairlane was a two tone in red and white. My aunt Lily willed it to me and I had my first set of keys at 16. Although it was already 7 years old, it was a chick magnet in rural Iowa. Bring back the two tones.

  13. Toyota makes the FJCruiser in a bright yellow. I like it.

    My wife and I bought a silver Toyota Tacoma. The options on hand were white and silver, and the wife opted for silver. Otherwise the truck was exactly perfect, but I think the red and blue ones look nicer. However, the silver should be cooler, an issue in hot southern california and in the deserts we visit.

  14. My other car is a Jeep Cherokee. Red, lifted, roof rack, “cuistom” rear bumper /tire jerry can carrier, etc. It is easy to spot in parking lots, unlike the silver Tacoma.

  15. My 1967 mustang is Clearwater Aqua Metallic, a very pretty color and my new favorite color is Laguna Seca Blue on my BMW M3, very pretty. Blah to the boring new colors.

  16. That ’55 Ford in the pic with 4-doors and buckskin & creme 2-tone paint was our car which Dad brought home that year. Next door neighbors had a ’55 Buick Special and our friends 5-houses down the block had a ’55 Chevy Bel-Air. Aaahhhhhhhh… Cars wuz Cars back then.

    I thought those were exceptionally lovely color combinations. And so they are, for a 1950’s car. I never was much of a car person, but I do like colors.

  20. I’ve only owned four cars, which I all bought used, and each time my purchase was motivated by practical considerations, such as price and condition. I never cared much about the color. I just accepted what I got.

    My ’73 Dodge Dart was metallic gold with a black vinyl roof.
    My ’73 VW Bug was tan, but it had been repainted. I saw evidence of orange under the tan.
    My ’81 Chevrolet Chevette was navy blue.
    My ’91 Toyota Corolla is white.

    No question about it, the Dart was the hands-down winner for color.

    Unfortunately, I’m going to be in the market for another car in the coming year. The Corolla is the best car I’ve ever owned, and everything still works. It runs great. Unlike most cars of that age, it’s not nickel and diming me to death. But the body is rotting away underneath, and my mechanic has bent over backwards to pass it at inspection the last two years. He pretty much told me I will need to replace it before the next inspection.

  21. Commenters on the earlier post showed some interest in the almost matching turquoise car on top of the small structure in the background.

    It appears to be an early C1 Corvette (1956 or 1957). It’s probably been placed up there to discourage pilferage.

    Incidentally, my first car was a well worn, but beautiful 1962 Corvette in Roman Red over Black.

    Had a used Dart 72 1979-80 for $100; it had around 80K miles when I bought it, and with a bit of shade tree mechanics I ran it into the ground for another 25-30K. Cheapest ride I ever had and the kids were always arguing in the back seat.

  23. That’s almost the same car I bought as a newly minted Naval Officer. (1955 Chevrolet Bel Air in white and forest green. :-)) The dealers in Pensacola were eager to get a piece of my Ensign’s paycheck. I think the total price was $1200. It was $200 down and the payments were $50/month for 24 months. With flight pay I was making about $285/month. Oh yeah, I was rolling in clover. 🙂

    It was a big deal to have my own wheels. No more bumming rides off base with buddies. I have never forgotten how free and independent that car allowed me to be. That’s what the Greens forget about cars/trucks. The freedom and independence they provide.

    Served me well for several years. When we married, my wife sold her car (A 1953 Chevie.) and then, when our son was born, we traded it in on a Chevrolet station wagon. Ah, the memories a picture can bring forth.

  24. Why, for Pete’s sake why? Those who want black cars do not realize that their cars “blend” into the road very well?

    Turn the damn lights on when the sky gets overcast! Black cars are hard to see anyway – no need to drive down the road with lights out in the dark.

    P.S. sorry for the rant – it just needed to be said when talking about car colors. Also, I notice that most of those idiot drivers have Obama 2012 bumper stickers – so that explains their stupidity.

    They don’t just NOT CARE — they HATE freedom and independence.

    This is not hypothetical, it’s a fact.

    Example: When a Daily Kos regular opined about a huge jump in his insurance rate, this was one of the responses:

    YOU *must* now buy the insurance WE dictate for you to have.

    Let’s look at the numbers:
    Her monthly has been $168 this year, mine $150. … My wife’s rate is gong to $302 per month and mine is jumping to $284.

    He does not indicate how high the deductible was, but suppose it was $5000.
    They were paying $318/month. Now they’re going to be paying $586, a difference of $268. So as long as they don’t have to pay for any significant medical expenses for all of NINETEEN MONTHS, they will have kept the entire deductible amount in their own pockets to spend as THEY wish for it to be used. They could put most of it in the bank for GENERAL catastrophe expenses (suppose their car is wrecked and not covered by insurance?) instead of just medical catastrophe expenses. Isn’t that SPECIAL?

    These bastards HATE freedom and independence.

    Never forget that — it will guide you in preparing for their lunatic responses to EVERYTHING.
