Your dog… — 6 Comments

  1. Sometimes, after I’ve been away for a few hours or days, I’ll peak in the window of the living room when I come home, and sure enough, the dogs (and the cats if they are in the room) go into their we’re so excited you are back at long last routine of yipping and jumping up and down (the cats put their tails up, meow, and rub up against each other). Our horses recognize us from a long way off and come running to the gate. Animals know far more than we give them credit for.

  2. I think my cats either see or hear my car pulling into the driveway, then get into position and wait for me to open the door.

  3. I knew that dogs recognize faces from the behavior of a neighbor’s dog. I walk the neighbor’s dog every day. On afternoon I was walking by the neighbor’s door. The inside was visible through the closed glass storm door- the main door was open. The dog started whining for me to come in and take him on a walk. I doubt the dog could smell me through the glass door, but he could see me.

  4. My bird dogs consistently make eye contact with me. I have found that dogs that do not make frequent eye contact also do not make good companions; they may be bird-hunting maniacs, but are not companions in any way, and basically don’t give a flip about you.

  5. I heard that too long of an eye contact with dogs is a challenge to the pack’s authority, either way.
