The art of age — 11 Comments

  1. Cohen was also a wonderful novelist — but both Beautiful Losers and The Favourite Game could only have been written by a young man. Here’s another of my favorite poems about watching the end of life approach.

    It’s called QUESTION.

    Body my house
    my horse my hound
    what will I do
    when you are fallen

    Where will I sleep
    How will I ride
    What will I hunt

    Where can I go
    without my mount
    all eager and quick
    How will I know
    in thicket ahead
    is danger or treasure
    when Body my good
    bright dog is dead

    How will it be
    to lie in the sky
    without roof or door
    and wind for an eye

    With cloud for shift
    how will I hide?

    — May Swenson

  2. “in life our identities constitute a temporary role that we then surrender (or which changes) at the time of death.” neo

To paraphrase William Shakespeare, “There are more things in heaven and earth, my friends, Than are dreamt of in our imaginings.”

  3. “a temporary role that we then surrender (or which changes) at the time of death.”

Well……. make up your mind. Don’t hide inside a parenthesis.

  4. J.J.,

Loved the comic and life is indeed something that often happens despite our plans and intentions. No regrets, so far its been a wonderful path.

I’ve been a fan of Cohen since Suzanne; a beautiful, haunting song from his younger years. There have been many who have recorded Cohen songs, but IMO no one does Cohen better than Jennifer Warnes:
