Thinking about swallowing a tapeworm in order to lose weight?

Well, don’t bother: you’ll probably gain weight instead.

Another myth shattered.

And boy, what some people won’t do for science.

what some people won’t do for science.

Maria Callas is said to have been one of the bold experimenters. Just thought I throw that out to tie two of your postings together ;)

  2. Ymarsakar Says:

There are plenty of micro bacteria stuff in your gut that’ll be happy to digest your food for you if you power them up using chi gong.

Yet people use general anti bacterial tablets to kill them.

  3. OldTexan Says:

Wow, I have a strong stomach and I can dress out a deer real fast with no problem and I can watch autopsy shows on TV while eating dinner but your posting about tapeworms just messed up my breakfast. The discussion of parasites in human bodies creeps me out and for a man to do that on purpose for scientific entertainment is really revolting.

I can honestly say that idea has never occurred to me.

This reminds me, IIRC, of a doctor who theorized that ulcers were caused by bacteria. Since he wasn’t believed he swallowed the bacteria and gave himself an ulcer which he cured with antibiotics. He won a Nobel Prize.

  6. Ymarsakar Says:

Symbiotes that enhanced a warrior’s combat effectiveness has been in science fiction for some time.

Though I think it might make a big difference to OldTexan if the organism was a symbiotic relationship or a parasitic one. Stuff crawling around your body sounds too much like body snatchers, puppetmastery, necromancy, or the old roach/voodoo spell.

  7. Yancey Ward Says:

Sure, you trade 50 pounds of fat for a 50 pound tapeworm.

  8. OldTexan Says:

Yep, there is that thing about parasites that I try to keep straight. Folks in Paris France are call Parisians while here in Texas we call folks from Paris Texas Parasites and I am not sure why.
