Socialism sounds good…

…until you experience enough of it, that is:

France’s governing Socialists have suffered big losses in municipal elections, with the opposition UMP claiming victory and the far right celebrating further gains.

These are local contests, but they indicate a dissatisfaction with the Socialists. The way voters have been going in recent years (including in this country), there’s a strong tendency for fickleness, though, and a “what have you done for me lately?” mentality that causes rather large and temporary pendulum swings. Only time will tell whether this is a more lasting change.

And, just as in the US, the very biggest cities tend to remain most strongly leftist:

The centre-right UMP was said to have captured a number of key cities, including Toulouse, Quimper, Limoges, Saint-Etienne, Reims, Roubaix and Tourcoing.

The Socialists retained control of Paris, with their candidate Anne Hidalgo due to become the capital’s first female mayor.

Remember, too, that left and right in Europe are not the same as in the US. For starters, the colors are reversed, with red for the left (as they used to be in the US). But more importantly, the entire apparatus is shifted to the left in general.

I strongly suspect that the French are unhappy with the managers and implementation of French socialism, rather than with socialism itself. That would of course apply to other Europeans as well.

Moochers and other free loaders do not abandon their core ideology, they merely search for a scapegoat and ultimately, anyone will do, as long as the finger of responsibility does not point to themselves.

At base, socialism is founded upon placing the blame upon ‘the other guy’…

City farms have very strict discipline regimens for sheep and livestock that try to breach the boundaries, Neo. Remember the shocking choke collar/fence system?

cue the voice from poltergeist: “Their here….”

Landlords in the Long Island community of Westbury will be targeted by a newly created police “Housing Enforcement Unit” that will “modify search warrant law to eliminate prior notice, aggressively use warrants and housing sweeps on a regular basis.”
Residents are being encouraged to report their neighbors to authorities if they suspect they are housing tenants who have not been registered with the government.

“Liberte, egalite, facsimile – When was the last time you enjoyed, say, a contemporary French film? How many must-see French actors are there? Their most famous actor has now taken out Russian citizenship (and moved to Belgium). Name a living French painter worth the wall space. Name a great French musician. A novelist, apart from Michel Houellebecq—and the French hate him. Their vaunted cuisine has become a moribund tourist performance.

Not yet, but we’re rapidly getting there. As I’ve said repeatedly, the American Republican Party is becoming like the “conservative” parties of Europe. They never seriously question the welfare state; they merely argue that they can administer it better than the “left” parties. They have no intention of reducing the size and scope of government. All they want is a seat at the table of power.

  6. Ymarsakar Says:

The Left is the same everywhere in the world, given their alliance status.

What’s different is that “liberal” still means free market like in Anglo countries. In the US, that stopped being the case awhile back.

  7. Artfldgr Says:

The effect of this staleness (boredom) is the same everywhere; it is seen in all the drug taking and drinking and every form of the tendency to increase the dose. Men seek stranger sins or more startling obscenities as stimulants to their jaded sense….They try to stab their nerves to life… They are walking in their sleep and trying to wake themselves up with nightmares. About Me

Previously a lifelong Democrat, born in New York and living in New England, surrounded by liberals on all sides, I've found myself slowly but surely leaving the fold and becoming that dread thing: a neocon.
