Beatle heredity — 8 Comments

  1. It’s only slightly off-topic, but . . .

I am reminded of a short comedy skit — was it Saturday Night Live? — in which the faux news announcer stated . . .

Comedian Bill Cosby, diva Beverly Sills, singer Johnny Cash, and news announcer Connie Chung have decided to form a singing group. They are as yet without a name for the group, and are holding a contest to determine the name.

Contestants may mail in their suggestions to Cosby, Sills, Cash, and Chung . . .

  2. Can’t imagine that it would be easy growing up with such famous fathers; yet, we hardly hear about anything bad about these (now adult) kids of the Beatles. So, something must have gone right.

  3. “So, something must have gone right.”

The Beatles certainly were no saints but they were comparatively level-headed considering the degree of fame and adulation they achieved. Contrast that to the trainwrecks of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. My theory is that since there were four of them they could at least rely on each other to maintain sanity unlike Presley and Jackson who must have lived lonely, atomized lives.

Another “pop” star whose kids seem to have turned out OK is Bob Dylan. In his case I think he understood early on the double-edged sword of celebrityhood and made a point of avoiding the limelight.

  4. Maybe a more interesting case of a “normal” celebrity child is Marlon Richards, son of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. Unbelievably, before he was 10 Marlon went on rock concert tours with his father when Keith was at the height of his heroin-taking, drug-bust phase. And his mother was the notorious Anita Pallenberg who was even wilder than Keith, yet Marlon has turned out to be quite well-adjusted. Apparently Keith did enough carousing for the both of them, and probably his grandkids and great-grandkids too.
