State of the Union

Tomorrow evening we have the State of the Union speech.

Ugh! I won’t be watching; I almost never watch those speeches, so why would I watch this one? But preliminary reports are all about Obama’s “Robin Hood” tax proposal, a measure that has virtually no chance of being passed but is just another wealth redistribution fish thrown to his base.

It is almost too tedious to discuss at this point. But here are some humorous observations on the matter, and here are the basics of the recommendation.

Oh, and here’s the real Robin Hood, the one I knew in my childhood. Big big crush (there are a ton of full episodes on YouTube, if you’re interested in pursuing your nostalgia):

So he’s going to steal from what’s left of the middle classes to give to the poor AND the rich.

  2. stan Says:

Robin Hood stole back the taxes taken by corrupt government officials from the people. The odds of Obama acting like Robin Hood are 1 in a quadrillion.

  3. Ray Says:

Who is the actor? There have been at least a dozen actors play Robin Hood.

  4. Exasperated Says:

WOW, this is one lame game that never gets old for them. Brace yourself for the same ole, same ole, worn out platitudes and clichés. I swear I would fall over speechless if any pol offered up a fresh original idea. But, never mind, that it doesn’t fix the underlying problem which is that jobs suitable for the average Joe are disappearing faster than they are being produced. They don’t address this because, well, it’s hard, but useless pontification is easy.

  5. neo-neocon Says:

    Ray:

I guess you are not over A Certain Age.

I, who am, know it is Richard Greene, who was in the Robin Hood TV show of the 1950s.

  6. chuck Says:

Forget the actor, it’s the bow that draws attention. What a skinny little thing, looks under powered and toy like. Definitely a poor casting choice.

Warbows were 120 lb pull and up, hunting bows maybe 40-60. Video here.

  7. CV Says:

I would rather have my teeth drilled than listen to this or any other speech delivered by BO.

But I presume the common theme will be “giving away stuff,” like “free” community college tuition.

Speaking of which, in Jim Geraghty’s Morning Jolt, he noted the following:

“Deep in the details of “Free Community College” plan:

(From the White House fact sheet: “Limit upside-down education savings incentives and consolidate them into a single benefit. The President’s plan would consolidate education savings incentives into one vehicle and redirect the savings into the better targeted AOTC. Specifically, the President’s plan will roll back expanded tax cuts for 529 education savings plans that were enacted in 2001 for new contributions, and — like Chairman Camp’s tax reform plan — repeal tax incentives going forward for the much smaller Coverdell education savings program.

“Oh, excuse me. You mean the 529 plans that just about every parent I know has, that are tax-free? The one where the whole point of the plan, and why people use it, is because it’s tax-free?”

“Americans for Tax Reform noticed: Under current law, 529 plans work like Roth IRAs: you put money in, and the money grows tax-free for college. Distributions are tax-free provided they are to pay for college. Under the Obama plan, earnings growth in a 529 plan would no longer be tax-free. Instead, earnings would face taxation upon withdrawal, even if the withdrawal is to pay for college. This was the law prior to 2001.”

“See if he mentions this little detail in Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address…”

  8. Ray Says:

OK. I found him. There were a lot more Robin Hoods than I thought.

  9. KLSmith Says:

    I liked Errol Flynn.

  10. NeoConScum Says:

Mister Robin Homey is going to pitch Taking from the dastardly rich and Giving to the GOVERNMENT. Only, Jeepers, that ain’t the way he’ll state it.

He’ll be blathering the most Leftist S of the Union yet. Princess How Warren and her Tribe will be pleased. Hillary will be faced with ‘going along’ orrrrrrrrr……??? May they all devour each other.

  11. MollyNH Says:

@neo, that’s my robin hood too, Richard Greene
    so handsome!!!
    That was a wonderful 50’s series .
we can all still sing the theme too, lol

  12. KLSmith Says:

The good the about tomorrow’s SOTU speech. There will be only one left for Dear Leader to deliver. 731 days. And the countdown of minus two years left begins.

  13. J.J. Says:

History repeats. Obama’s Robin Hood tax is a twist on the Luxury Taxes on autos, boats, aircraft, jewelry, and furs that were enacted in 1991. Those luxury taxes were so hated and ineffective in raising new revenue, while at the same time destroying jobs, that all the taxes except those on luxury autos were dropped in 1993. The luxury auto tax was finally dropped as ineffective and counterproductive in 2001.

All of these tax schemes are meant to redistribute wealth. Wealth redistribution has never worked wherever it has been tried. Those experiments have been run in the USSR, Red China, Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea. Yet, the elite progs keep believing it just wasn’t done “right” in all those other places. Unfortunately, no one with any kind of national megaphone will point this out.

  14. neo-neocon Says:

    MollyNH:

That show, and Superman, were my two favorite TV programs as a child.

  15. NeoConScum Says:

Nope, Ladies. No disrespect intended for your Greene vote, but mine goes to Harold Warrender as Locksley(Robin)in the absolutely wonderful 1952 film,”Ivanhoe”. Great from start to finish.

  16. Lizzy Says:

Funny, I don’t remember the guy who kept raising taxes being the hero in Robin Hood.

What’s sad is how easily the MSM will pick up this angle, no doubt w/help from the WH.

  17. J.J. Says:

Ray, thanks for the list of Robin Hood actors. I never saw the TV show with Greene as Robin. Errol Flynn was the only Robin I remembered because I had seen his movie. I wondered how I missed seeing the TV series. Then I learned that the series ran from 1954 to 1959. Oh yes, 1954 – 59 was a period when I seldom, if ever, watched TV. Struggling to get started in my Navy career, often deployed, and too impecunious to own a TV until 1959. The realization dawned that any TV shows before 1959 were not in my memory at all. Pop culture has never been my strong suit. 🙁

An amazing list of actors who have played Robin Hood. The only other one than Flynn I was aware of was Kevin Costner, but never saw that movie because I knew Costner was no Errol Flynn.

  18. Lord Squirrel Says:

Since we can pretty much agree this is a nonstarter with a Republican-controlled House and Senate, what makes anyone think he just won’t go around Congress entirely and rewrite the Tax Code all by himself? He’s already done it with both immigration and Obamacare numerous times.

Why would anyone think Congress will even *try* to stop him? They’ve rolled over and given him everything he’s asked for up until now.

  19. MollyNH Says:

I thought I heard greta van sustern say Os stuff can be vacated when he FINALLY leaves !

  20. chris Says:

    i had a crush on Bernadette O’Farrell.
    and later
    Patricia Driscoll.
