Watching “American Sniper” in Iraq — 11 Comments

  1. Clint’s up to almost $250M now, and I still hope he (eventually) reaches $1B. He’s already passed all other war movies of all time., and as Rush said on January 26:

…I’ll tell you what it is, folks. I think the success of American Sniper, there’s a whole lot of things rolled into it. I think people are going to this movie in the same way they showed up to vote in November, and I think the box office for American Sniper is an extension of the November elections….
….I think it is the American people continuing to express two things: Their utter outrage at what is happening in Washington and the inattention Washington is paying to the health and the goodness of the country. And the second thing that they are doing is enforcing what they believe to be good old traditional American values, and everything wrapped up in it. And they want people to know that they are out there in huge numbers and that they are not going away…”

I would add that Clint Eastwood is also a very, very good director.

  2. “one Iraqi man named Gaith Mohammed said that it played to full and enthusiastic crowds. “……, but others were screaming ‘Fuck, shoot him! He has an IED, don’t wait for permission!!’” he said of one of the film’s many tense scenes.”
It’s eye opening to look through someone else’s prism. It isn’t always about us or the histrionics of American political jockeying.

  3. Michael Moore: “Fuck..Shoot him!!” From a pesky A-Rab to an American warrior to dispatch an A-Rab Evil Doer. Does he know something you don’t, Comrade Mikey? Answer: You bet your Fat Azz.

  4. ” . . . reports have started to come out this week that reveal their often unexpected reactions.”

    Why, does that author think:

” . . .shoot him! He has an IED, don’t wait for permission!!”

    is an unexpected reaction?

  5. I want to see a movie about the Counterinsurgency “Surge” and Anbar Awakening.

Leftist propagandists define the insurgents as champions of the Iraqi people and legitimate resistance to the occupation. Suffering caused by the insurgents is ascribed to the Americans. I imagine the Left adapted the template for the Viet Cong and NVA.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi people that are victimized define the insurgents as what they are: terrorists and murderers that prey on the Iraqi people.

  6. The protests over “American Sniper” by the usual suspects reminds me of the statement by COL Nathan Jessup in “A Few good men.” They can’t handle the truth!

They want men to stand on the ramparts and protect them. They don’t want to admit it, but they need them there. Then when they find out they are rough men who know how to kill, it frightens them. They realize how inept and vulnerable they are. And they don’t like it. They need to think that they are better than those rough men. If they could man up and show some class, they might show a tiny bit of gratitude for the rough men like Kyle who protect them. But they are classless jerks with no grasp of reality and no ability to climb down off their moral high horses.

  7. After watching the movie I concluded we have a great and good country and a rotten, weak and clueless elite.

There is still evil in the world and the Left doesn’t get it.

And I get sick thinking about the dead and wounded in Iraq and then Obama surrendering. That error -.compounded by the coming unforced error with Iran’s nukes – is going to cost the West dearly.

  8. JJ: “They can’t handle the truth!”
    Cornhead: “clueless elite.”

I’ll repeat the suggestion I made under Neo’s previous post about ‘American Sniper’. When the false narrative about the ‘why’ of Operation Iraqi Freedom is brought out to criticize the movie, don’t run away from it. Rather, seize the opportunity to correct it with this.

  9. Interesting. Usually it’s the anti war Hollywood movies, tax free, that make it big overseas. They don’t have to fund their production costs merely off US theaters.

  10. JJ’s observation about liberals links nicely with the observations of LTC (RET) David Grossman regarding wolves, sheep, and sheepdogs. The
liberals are the sheep, the wolves are the bad guys of every type, and the sheepdogs are the warriors, police, and firemen who place themselves in harms way protecting the sheep. Because the sheep dogs resemble the wolves in their capacity for, in some cases, lethal force the sheep fear and resent them. Look up Grossmans full description of this topic, it is well worth reading.
