Romney answers… — 11 Comments

  1. I have to wonder why he’s doing this. Sure, he’s raising money for a good cause, but there’s plenty of other ways he could do that.

I suspect this is just something he’s always wanted to do — raise money with a prize fight.

It’s also a cool thing to add to one’s personal resume, as it were. How many Presidential candidates have done this? It’s a little like remembering that only one President so far has been issued a patent (Lincoln), or that only one President has an original proof of the Pythagorean Theorem to his credit (James Garfield).

  2. Now, that’s a brave man.

    You got that right.

Even though Holyfield is 52, the athletic difference between a former world-champ boxer and an Average Joe is so huge it’s ridiculous. Romney may be in great shape for his age (68), but probably has few boxing skills or none at all.

I assume Holyfield understands this is just a wacky event for charity and will only poke and jab at Romney, maxing out at maybe 25% of his power. If Holyfield actually landed a hard punch, Romney might never get up off the canvass.

  3. Gary:

I actually think it will be a semi-choreographed comedy romp of some sort, without any real punches landed at all.

Unless Romney’s been keeping some mad boxing skills under wraps, along with his torso.

Ah, that makes sense. I quickly skimmed a couple articles and they didn’t say it would be “choreographed,” though there was a hint of something tongue-in-cheek about them. Clearly it cannot be anything resembling a real boxing match.

  5. As I write this, I’m 62 years old. Taking the ring with a boxing champ would be news I’d want on my tombstone. Who cares about being president?

  6. Neo –

You left out the next (and last) line in the article!

“Romney’s wife, Ann, said that she has “already made the physical therapy appointments after the bout.””

I’m curious how this all came about. Did one of them make a joking comment, and then decide to run with it? Or was it something else? This isn’t exactly the kind of pairing that you’d typically expect to see for a celebrity charity match event.

Yep, I agree. Heck, any ol’ body could be president (Look, Obama has been twice); but, going a round with a champ – now that is something!

It reminds me of Jack Palance:

He had a great career; but, who could forget that one arm push up. What a way to end a career!

  8. Steve: Yes, seen it and loved it (although I didn’t make the connection until you mentioned it).

I can much more easily imagine Mitt Romney taking a punch than Hugh Grant…
