Four Marines killed at Chattanooga Naval and Marine Reserve Center

The circumstances are as follows, as far as we know up to now:

The attacks, which happened minutes apart, began when a single shooter, identified as 24-year-old Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, drove a silver Ford Mustang convertible to a Lee Highway recruiting center at 10:45 a.m and fired more than a dozen rounds into the building. After his initial barrage, he led responding police officers on a high-speed chase down Amnicola Highway to a second military installation, where he opened fire again and was killed after a gun battle that one witness estimated lasted 20 minutes.

Three victims were rushed to Erlanger’s Trauma Center, including a Chattanooga police officer and two members of the military. One of those patients was discharged from Erlanger this afternoon; the other two are still being treated. Including the victim, the violence claimed five lives, with three more wounded.

Officials have said the shooter died during the attack, though they did not say how he died. During the attack on Amnicola Highway, numerous Chattanooga and Hamilton County officers “actively and enthusiastically” engaged the suspect, said Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher.

The motive behind the attack, which the FBI said came without warning, is still under investigation. A U.S. official said there was no indication Abdulazeez was on the radar of federal law enforcement before the shootings, according to the Associated Press.

So, I think we can safely say that this is almost certainly a case of Islamic terrorism. How hooked into terror networks Abdulazeez was is unknown; he could be a lone wolf who was merely inspired by their propaganda, or more closely connected. He was born in Kuwait, and no one seems to know whether he was a US citizen or not, although one would think that would be easy enough to determine. He has an engineering degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, was on his high school (in Chattanooga) wrestling team, and is said to have been popular with his classmates.

Interesting how well this fits the profile of another US Islamic terrorist born in an Muslim country, on the wrestling team, and popular: that would be Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. I wonder whether Abdulazeez was also an affable stoner.

We also know that Abdulazeez was “was a student intern a few years ago at the authority, a federally owned utility that operates power plants and dams across the South.” Interesting. It’s also not surprising that he was an engineering student; for some reason this particular background is very very common among more well-educated jihadis.

It would also be interesting to know how long ago his family came here, and why. An almost laughable (if the topic weren’t so very serious) Onion-esque article on Yahoo features an interview with a high school classmate of Abdulazeez’s who is quoted as saying, “”They were your average Chattanooga family.”

Right.

[NOTE: A related issue is why on earth places like the venue of the shooting still are required to be gun-free zones. You might as well call them “sitting-duck zones.” It’s a topic I wrote about before here.]

  2. During WWI the acknowledged Caliph of the Sunni Muslim world, the Ottoman emperor, was hard pressed. The Caliphate issued fatwas calling for Muslims to rise up in jihad. They cited three forms of jihad, and provided Quranic references as well as support from the Sunnah of Muhammad (Sunnis get their name from the fact that they are adherents of the Sunnah).

    First was the jihad of the entire Ummah, the entire population of faithful Sunnis. Second was jihad in small groups. And finally jihad by individuals.

    What Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez did today was jihad. It goes back to the roots of Islam. We need to be honest about it.

    On Thursday’s The Lead, CNN analyst Tom Fuentes was unwilling to conclude that the perpetrator of a mass shooting against servicemen in Chattanooga, Tennessee was Muslim. John Berman asked the former FBI assistant director, “Now that we have the name [Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez], the key questions are what?” Fuentes replied, “I know…what the name sounds like, but we don’t know that it’s a Muslim name. We know it’s an Arabic name. We don’t know what this individual was believing in, and that’s what they’re going to be trying to determine.”

    A guy named “Mohammad” shots up a place, and the “motive” is still under investigation?

    (Yet, a guy waving a confederate battle flag shoots up a place and his motive isn’t under investigation – it is just assumed to be hate because of the flag.)

  24. My husband had the local news on this morning and this story was reported like one reading a boring script. The next “story” was the weather and for some reason jubilation complete with clapping ensued. It looked like adult kindergartners. But let a “white-Hispanic” or police officer shoot a thug or criminal and all the emotion and concern emerges. Not to mention the immediate jumps to motive. What a world!!

  25. Read that his father is Palestinian and was investigated for terrorist ties; but nothing came of it. Now I read that they are investigating–after the fact–that the murderer made numerous trips to the Middle East. But, no alarms.

    Of course all of his acquaintances say he was a picture perfect youth. One high school coach called him an All American kid. Yeah. Right up to the time he decided to attack the United States.

    I wonder when we are going to get serious. I wonder when the FBI, et al, will pay close attention to what is taught in Mosques; and act accordingly if sedition is preached.     It is a bipartisan, imbecilic policy, untethered from reality.

    There NEVER is a gun free zone as the criminals ALWAYS have guns. Its part of the delusions of anti-gunners of both parties. None of the mass shootings would have taken place or been as bad if the innocents had been armed.

    On military installations, at a minimum, all officers and NCO’s should always be armed. It’s like off duty police who carry.

    In response to ISIS, Obama makes the most pathetic of pinprick strikes. As a result they are emboldened to attack us directly through radicalization or use of jihadis in the US. With his recent capitulation to Iran he has signaled the world that not only will we finance and support terrorism we will do nothing extraordinary to stop it. Their complaint against Bush, from my sources, were merely indications that the Left were already planning on killing lots more than Bush ever could.

    Imagine your neighbors, Democrats, Leftists, and at the top Hussein, getting a big phat smile on their face whenever Americans conveniently die in foreign wars. That is what they support and wish for. It gets rid of inconvenient voters and paves the way for colonization. Then consider how you should treat these… “Americans”.

    Even in Baltimore, the unarmed citizens were protecting the cops. And we should obey the LEOs and offer our lives because they protect us? Spoken like a serf, of course. Citizens protected the police in Baltimore.

  52. susana, I think it generally means people who carry weapons in their arms, but there are other traditions where H2H fighters considered their own body and minds to be weapons. That is not always practical though.

    To the Leftist alliance, the “armed forces” are two things:

    1. Cannonfodder that they use to make American families suffer and their Islamic Jihad allies happy with rape and torture.

    2. Cannonfodder that the Left likes to order to do their dirty work.
