Sweden: where starry-eyed multi-culti generosity meets harsh reality
Here’s an interesting article in Foreign Policy on the situation facing Sweden in its attempt to absorb the recent wave of Syrian/Iraqi/Afghan newcomers.
Reading the first third or so of the article almost made me stop reading it. Although the general topic interests me, the author seemed to be blaming Europe for not being more magnanimous, and also appeared to be making some false analogy to WWII refugees—who may indeed have been from other countries, but who nevertheless were part of the same basic Judeo-Christian culture as the Swedes and held pretty much the same values.
But then the article shifted gear and got a lot more interesting:
Diana Janse, a former diplomat and now the senior foreign policy advisor to the Moderate Party (which Swedes view as “conservative”), pointed out to me that some recent generations of Swedish refugees, including Somalis, had been notably unsuccessful joining the job market. How, she wondered, will the 10,000-20,000 young Afghan men who had entered Sweden as “unaccompanied minors” fare? How would they behave in the virtual absence of young Afghan women? But she could barely raise these questions in political debate. “We have this expression in Swedish, asiktskorridor,” she said. “It means ”˜opinion corridor’ ”” the views you can’t move outside of.” Merely to ask whether Sweden could integrate Afghans today as it had Bosnians two decades before was to risk accusations of racism.
I’d never heard the term “opinion corridor” before, but I’m certainly familiar with the concept. And Europe must be far worse than the US in that respect.
The author then goes on to interview a refugee arriving in Malmo—and this refugee really is a refugee, because he’s a Yazidi from Iraq. As such, he seems to not be aware that, now that he’s in Sweden, he might be crossing the boundaries of the Swedish opinion corridor when he says this:
I asked Edo why he didn’t stay in Diyarbakir. Krit relayed my question, and then replied, in a whisper, “He says, `I can not live with Muslims.’” I pointed out that Diyarbakir was a largely Kurdish city. Krit, amused, said to me, “You have the black dog and the white dog, but they’re both dogs.” Given Swedish hypersensitivity to ethnic stereotyping, I’m hoping that Edo did not try out that expression at his asylum interview.
The following is how Sweden is “vetting” its immigrants. It is apparent that the policy is dangerously—almost insanely—naive [emphasis mine]:
The Swedish Migration Agency is responsible for deciding who does and does not receive asylum. The agency assumes that anyone fleeing Syria has a well-founded fear of persecution or death, and thus automatically accepts such applications. Large majorities of Iraqis and Afghans are also accepted. Sweden does not take economic migrants; for this reason, authorities deny almost all migrants from Albania or Kosovo. At the same time, Sweden has made only the most modest efforts to ensure that rejected applicants actually leave.

But there is evidence that more Swedes are entering the no-go zone of the opinion corridor:
Back at the Red Cross station, opinion was surprisingly anti-refugee, including among volunteers. The translator said that he did not believe many of the new arrivals would ever be able to integrate into Sweden’s liberal, individualistic society. A border policeman told me, “Last summer, my grandmother almost starved to death in the hospital, but the migrants get free food and medical care. I think a government’s job is to take care of its own people first, and then, if there’s anything left over, you help other people.” I had heard the same view a few months earlier in Hungary, the country in Europe most outspokenly hostile to refugees ”” the anti-Sweden. Europe has not experienced economic growth in almost a decade. One could hardly think of a worse moment to ask citizens to make sacrifices on behalf of outsiders.
I’ll close with this startling fact:
Unlike Americans, Swedes do not raise the subject of terrorism when they question the virtues of accepting asylum-seekers. I arrived in the country days after the Paris attacks, and I expected to hear a pitched battle over the dangers to national security posed by the newcomers. Scarcely anyone raised the issue. Sweden has not suffered a serious attack on its soil; the national mood could change very quickly if it did. But the issue that is raised ”” in Sweden as in Germany, Hungary, and all over Europe ”” is national integration.
As I said, the whole thing is worth reading, if you can get past the first third.
Western Europe is committing cultural and demographic suicide. Islam will fill the void unless the people get out of the “opinion corridor” and fight back.
Could it happen here? Obama has imported 200,000 Muslims a year with no outcry. At least Trump broke through the PC barrier when he proposed a temporary halt to Muslim immigration. BTW, he is now polling at 44%.

Americans, Canadians, Australians – we feel like we managed that quite a while ago and have moved on to getting along with people who really aren’t much like us at all. Which turns out to be difficult, and if people can’t agree on certain common rules, may actually be impossible.
My fourth son has lived in Norway the last five years. Norwegians tell him things they don’t dare say on the record. They still don’t even like the Swedes and the Finns all that much. Eastern Europeans they tolerate, but they don’t marry them. And these new groups they really don’t like at all.

I spent quite a lot of time in Sweden in 2003-2005 on regular business trips and they were just starting to see the immigration issue affect their infrastructure. It has continued to go down hill from there. The town of Malmo on the Danish border is basically a no-go zone at night for non Muslims, so much so, that the Danes re-instituted their border crossing six years ago well before all this latest “refugee” crisis. Europe is gone and will not be coming back. Ii is indeed cultural suicide and it could happen here if we are not careful. I am sorry, I spent over 12 years in the Middle East of my 20+ years in the Marines and do not believe that we are in a war of religions, but do believe we are in a war of ideologies. Radical Islam is an ideology that is not consistent with Western Cultural values and will never be consistent with those values. That is just a fact no matter how you spin it.

The problem of rapes in Sweden is worse now than when I first wrote about it almost a decade ago. The 6,320 reported rapes officially registered in that country in 2012 almost certainly do not represent the full number of such crimes that actually took place that year. In 2880 of these registered rapes, the victims were minors and children aged between 0-17 years old. A surprising 10% of these victims of child rape in Sweden in 2012 were boys. The male percentage of rape victims is smaller for adults, but still higher than it used to be some time ago.

Whether consciously or subconsciously, every European knows they are in the process of committing societal suicide and condemning their children to future slavery.
The majority (60%) of European’s cultural conditioning is so deep that they’d rather commit suicide than, in their own minds, stand guilty of racism and nationalism. They have drank deeply of the Left’s kool-aid.
They must be absolved of their guilt and, they accept this to be the cost. You cannot save someone from themselves.

The difference is the cultural weakness hobbling us today is not due to a core definition that has formed the social basis for hundreds of years. Or even, for that matter, decades. It’s a recent phenomenon engineered and asserted by Left activists that can and does re-define social principles seemingly on the spot.

That really chokes me up.
The Shah?
Pinochet? The man who saved Chile?
Forced conscription? Is there any other kind? Our draft was not forced?

With that as part of the intro, I stopped reading. What follows, well I leave that to Neo.
The takeaway from the MattBracken comment quoted by Geoffrey Britain is not that a belief in peace is wrong. Nor even that “starry-eyed multi-culti generosity” is wrong.
The takeaway is competition.
What is wrong is the inability – especially self-imposed inability – to win over the “harsh reality” of the arena versus the activists championing other competing paradigms. Remember, activism is not specific to any ideology. It works for anyone for any cause – anyone willing to compete for his cause, anyway.
The first issue is not ideas. It’s competition and method. Nunuku’s law was fine. Obviously, it worked for a long time. To impose his ideas, the legendary activist leader, his tribe, and likely one or more generation of successors, established the dominance to do so under fearsome circumstances. They were originally warriors – activists – and had to be, before they could be peaceniks. But his descendants lost their warrior way to peace. When their dominance was challenged anew, they chose not to muster the basic competitive principles that had established the dominance their ancestors needed to impose their preferred paradigm of peace in the first place.
Nunuku’s law was fine. His descendants’ choice not to compete for it was not fine.
Had they chosen to compete as activists, they could and likely would have won against the insurgent Maori. Instead, they chose to be weaker than their competitors. Thus they were unable to keep the dominance necessary to impose their preferred paradigm of peace against the willing activists who championed a competing paradigm.
Today, we see the same phenomenon of self-imposed weakness endemic among the mainstream conservatives of the Right. Despite citing liberally to our nation’s activist founding fathers, most conservatives will stubbornly resist adopting the activism needed again today to compete for dominance in the only social cultural/political game there is. The consequence of their self-imposed competitive weakness, like the analogy in the MattBracken comment, is an evidently weaker insurgent faction, ie, the Trump-front alt-Right, can threaten to displace mainstream conservatives via the simple expedient of mimicking Left activism.
Again, the first issue is not ideas. It’s competition and method. Those who would keep the West – including “starry-eyed multi-culti generosity”- they can. If they will compete for it.

I am an American, but I have extensive connections with Sweden- I speak the language, and I have many friends, colleagues and relatives there. There is a real divide among the Swedes I know – my teacher friends are all aboard the “New Sweden” train- the education establishment acts in concert with the government and the press to relentlessly suppress dissent. People there are shocked to learn that I know about places like Rosengé¥rd and Rinkeby (Muslim shitholes in Stockholm and Malmé¶ respectively) My relatives, who are mostly people with jobs and owners of small shops are less thrilled with their country becoming the rape capital of Europe (and, with apologies to Whoopi Goldberg, we are talking about “rape-rape” here, not the musings of some regretful coed). The Sweden Democrats, despite the relentless drumbeat of the press and government officials calling them racists and other nasty things, are gaining popularity. Increasing numbers of Swedes are wondering why they should tolerate no go zones (Yes Virginia, the DO exist) in major cities, and why the average citizen should be required to subsidize the new and growing “Swedish ” underclass. Last time I was in Gé¶teborg my cab driver from the train station was a young Iraqi- he told me (in broken Swedish- my Swedish was way better than his, and I’ve never lived there. He’d been ther FIVE years!) how much he hated Sweden, how little the Swedish government had done for him and his (extended) family. I guess, as the great Howie Carr says, “no good deed goes unpunished”. Add to this the fact that many young Swedes are not reproducing, and you have a situation rapidly approaching the point of no return. We could be witnessing the destruction of a beautiful, civilized country, and the extinction of it’s people. Perhaps the ordinary folk can reclaim their country from the SJWs, but I am not optimistic. It’s sad.
