I always try to hit the nail upon the top. It would be rather hard to hit it on the bottom, wouldn’t it?
Speaking as a one time carpenter, there are occasions when it’s useful to hit the nail on the “bottom”, i.e., the wire-nail on it’s point in order to blunt it prior to driving that nail into a piece of wood liable to split. The dulled end crushes it’s way through the fibers, rather than wedging it’s way and thereby splitting the piece.
Ha, I notice how blunting a nail resembles proofreading a text before hitting “submit comment”. Apologies for the split~missed possessive apostrophes.
