Congress and the latest on gun control
Four measures—two by Democrats, two by Republicans—went down to defeat:
The measures Monday each went down in succession on largely party line votes. The 60-vote threshold required for passage prevented even Republicans, who control the chamber, from pushing through their favored measures.
The Senate rejected first a Republican proposal to update the background check system for gun purchases, which would have required states to add more information on mental health records to a national database. It also included a provision to alert law enforcement agencies when an individual who was on a government terror watch list in the last five years buys a gun.
Obviously, Republicans want people to die of gun violence. Democrats, the Left and the media attempting to use an Islamic terrorist attack to further gun control is despicable. Disarmament of the populace is critical to furthering our path to the collective. It’s why the left never lets pass an opportunity to reach that goal.

Received a link from The Guardian on the lack of action by the U.S. Senate. It appeared to have been sent yesterday.
This morning I looked at the article, and went to the comments section figuring I’d say “Good”.
Comments were already closed. Not that mine would have made it past the gate keepers.
First, they disarmed the babies in a “final solution”.
That said, we have rights and responsibilities. It isn’t a choice.
The votes were 47-53, 44-56, 47-53, and 47-53. Even though they went down, the votes were too d**ned close for my comfort.
75+ million gun owners, perhaps 300 million guns in private hands, many of them predating the idiotic 1968 gun control act. All those war trophies from WW1 and WW2 are not included in the totals. I have a two Mauser 98s that I inherited that required no 4437 atf form. Them and the horse they rode in on.
Unfortunately, an act of Islamic terrorism has seemingly been transformed into just another mass killing that now calls for a debate on gun control. When we don’t deal with the real issues, we will continue to have problems.

But 7.9 is not the most plentiful or readily available round, and would likely dry up almost immediately should there ever be real civil unrest in this country.
It also sounds like one of yours might even be the earlier 88 type rather than a K. That would be cool. A number of years ago some importers were selling Argentine and Chilean Mausers of that kind. Mostly beat up, but because they were 100 years old they could be had without any rigamarole. If they had good barrels, I imagine a pretty nice sporter could be made out of them, with some trouble.
Whatever one thinks of the .223, it is likely to remain relatively plentiful for a long time to come; and if you are willing to plink with standard ball ammo, it can be had relatively cheaply.
7.62×39 is of course also very plentiful and very cheap in the steel case corrosive versions. The problem (aside from the round’s own limitations) is the platforms. The most common are relatively inaccurate, the accurate ones are not cheap. I bought a CZ bolt a couple years ago for potential varmint use, and so far am not especially impressed with it. Might turn out to be a MOA or thereabouts gun after it is used for a bit and with the right rounds, but so far looks to be about 2.5 or so … at best.
That said you can take a deer with either one at the right distance and with the right placement.

it seems to me that gun control can’t be solved because Democrats are using guns to kill each other — and want it to stop — whereas Republicans are using guns to defend against Democrats.

People should seriously consider disarming Democrats. You know they are the enemy, by now. They aren’t the only ones.

If you look at the statistics, you’re more likely to be killed in a fall than by shooting. This assumes of course that you aren’t a gang member or drug dealer. People in those groups have a high probability of being shot. Years ago I went to a symposium on drugs taught by the DEA and was told the life expectancy of the average drug dealer was about 2 years. Obviously life insurance would be very expensive.
