Terror in Nice
[Further UPDATES as the story develops.]
A terrorist drove a truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, killing 73 people.
As with all such horrific events, reports of the death toll and other details will probably change over time.
After the terrorist purposely plowed the truck into the crowd, there was more:
A gunman reportedly got out of the lorry and fired into the crowd on the seafront Promenade des Anglais, an area popular with tourists in the Riviera resort, leaving dead and injured people lying in the street.
He was shot dead by police but there were reports that an accomplice had fled and that guns and grenades were found in the lorry.
The local Prefecture described the slaughter as a “terrorist attack” but an interior ministry spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet, said it was too early to be certain of the killers’ motives.
Maybe not certain, in the literal sense of the word, but certain beyond a reasonable doubt.
It doesn’t take much to turn an ordinary, benign object into a weapon, does it?

An eyewitness says that the truck was zigzagging through the crowd, aiming at people who were trying to get away.

A terrorism expert on Fox (I didn’t catch the name) said earlier this evening that an Al Qaeda manual from 2010 suggested these sort of vehicular attacks. There have been quite a few in Israel, although not of this magnitude. The manual suggested that the best way to get high casualties was to choose a road that had few vehicles and many pedestrians, perhaps one that had been turned into a pedestrian mall. I just heard another commentator on Fox saying that was the situation this evening for the Bastille Day celebration and fireworks; the road had been closed to vehicles and was loaded with pedestrians.
There’s little doubt this was carefully planned to maximize the number of people killed.
First reports on the identity of the terrorist state that he was 31, a resident of Nice who was born in Tunisia. I wonder how long he’s lived in France.
Such a mortality figure via murderous truck sounds like many were run over after having fallen or bein knocked down. Women and children not only unspared, but easier prey.
Scary world. To date, we can probably be thankful that terrorists are relatively stupid and narcissistic, but that seems to be changing as the numbers of them, both active and potential, grows.
Attacks like the one tonight are damned near impossible to foil if someone decides to perform one, and it is surprising to me that large motor vehicles haven’t been used until now against crowded streets and sidewalks.
Europeans are catching hell. It is ironic that their immigration and refugee policies have backfired so violently. (I know that the immigration policies had a self-serving component of importing cheap labor.)
There should be lessons to be learned. The obvious being not to accept foreigners who cannot, or will not, assimilate into your culture. Of course if you do not know who is entering your country, then you are helpless.
I wonder how Americans would react in the face slaughter on the level that is occurring around the world on a continuing basis. The 9-11 attacks were a shock, but subsequent ones have been relatively small scale compared to what others are suffering. We may yet be tested.
I expect that our national leadership will make the usual feckless noises.

We have sunken freeways from which one cannot easily exit or flee, long traffic tunnels, overpasses that make good platforms, and plenty of motivated Muslims to make use of them. Just wait and see.
The California shooter was planning just such an attack, but it never came off.
A few shooters with automatic weapons, a few improvised explosives, rush hour traffic, and a population of guilt ridden breast beating masochists just begging to be murdered. What more could a good Jihadist ask for?

FBI Director James Comey said Tuesday that he would not recommend charges against the so-called mentally ill truck driver over his use of an unlicensed assault truck against private citizens. Thus removing a huge shadow hovering over the Bastille Day celebration.
But Comey administered an extraordinary tongue-lashing to all right wing extremists and their supporters, rebuking them, and warning against any response in the face of the latest unfortunate ‘incident’.
Meanwhile Secretary of State Kerry dispatched has-been singer James Taylor to Nice to serenade the fearful muslim community with “You’ve Got a Friend” in an attempt to quiet their fears of an extremist right wing backlash. Muslim leaders say that “our community cannot withstand another “Bring back our girls” hashtag campaign or “We are all Charlie Hebdo” campaign.”
President Obama has come out punching back twice as hard and advocatingthe banning of assault trucks.

The killer in Nice reportedly had a truck full of weapons and explosives, He did not buy those on his debit card. He was funded and supported by an entity with resources. Possibly a nominally friendly regime. Are we afraid to destabilize autocratic regimes that are known to be terrorist friendly? Are chaotic countries more dangerous than rich pseudo-friendly ones that quietly fund the groups who do the dirty work? Should we worry if there is another unstable country or two in a region characterized by instability?

Some very good commentary tonight on Vince the Megyn Kelly show. Especially by General Flynn, Zhudi Jasser, Brad Thor, and Bill Bennett. These men are all saying what I have been for years – go after the Wahhabi/Salafi/political Islam/Sharia ideology, their imams, and their financiers. Yes, there is a military, political, and economic strategy to be executed as well, but the Islamic fundamentalist ideology must be attacked as well. Muslims who do not renounce sharia and the intolerance of Wahhabism can never assimilate in the West. They must be excluded from Western civilized societies and, if necessary, eliminated.

That prescription is certainly far superior to the Obama administration’s facilitation of Islamic jihad. But it makes the mistake of falsely separating Islam into ‘fundamentalist’ (radical) and ‘moderate’ Islam. There is only Islam and the difference between a radical Muslim and a moderate Muslim is the degree of devoutness and self-honesty.
A strategy which only seeks to attack ‘radical Islam’ necessarily avoids identifying the source of Islamic terrorism and can only achieve a temporary peace.
Only by identifying Islam itself as the source can the disease be addressed. Islam itself must be held accountable.
Saudi Arabia exports and funds terrorism. We pay them for their oil so we are funding our own terrorists. Over the last year the Sauds have pumped at 110% and bankrupted nearly 100 American oil companies. But we have more oil than the rest of the world. If you listen to the Wahhabi imams they will tell you they are the only true Muslims, but there are millions of Muslims who do not follow their ideology. I know you are convinced that Islam cannot undergo a reformation as Christianity and Judaism did because of the doctrine that the Quran is the literal word of Allah. But there are millions of Muslims who have no idea what is in the Quran. Their only source of information is their imam. Since the 1960s the Saudis have been sending Wahhabi imams out to preach their venom. As they have spread their venom, the “Muslim problem” has blossomed. If we don’t enlist moderate Muslims to challenge the Wahhabi doctrine, the only other option is to kill them until they reject Wahhabism much as the Germans rejected Nazism and the Japanese rejected Bushido Shintoism. Because of instant communications and videos that butcher’s bill will not be acceptable to the civilized world. There are too many who want to “give peace a chance,” or send out tweets “#We stand with you.” We could not win WWII today. We are too sensitive.

I remember a conversation with my brother a few days after 9/11 in which we discussed all the relatively simple, relatively small-scale things terrorists could do that could very seriously damage and demoralize society. But they seemed to be focused on the big spectacular attack. I’m afraid they’ve finally caught on.

J.J.’s point about Wahhabi doctrine is well taken. Not all Muslims are Wahhabis. The Shia hate the Wahhabis. They support terrorism and hate Israel but they hate Wahhabis.
El Sisi is not such a good example. He went to Al-Azhar University and asked the theologians to change the orthodox interpretation of mainstream Islam so they will not have to kill the rest of the World’s population. That action by El Sisi reflects well on him but damns Islam since it is an admission that as it stands, Islam does support eliminating infidels through violence. Any Muslim who supports Sharia law wants do enslave or murder all infidels. A large percent of Muslims World Wide who are not Wahhabis still support Sharia law.

The general will of We the People is a function of activism.
Individuals can react a certain way. A large aggregate, perhaps even majority of individuals can share similar reactions. In the traditional political relationship, the Commander in Chief would more or less follow the contours of those reactions, all things else from the perspective of his Office considered: the primary example is President Bush’s reaction to 9/11.
But manufacturing the bundle of individual reactions into a social response is a function of activism and, in that aspect, leadership.
Under current leadership, how social America collectively, as opposed to individual (even a majority of) Americans, might react, that question goes to the Commander in Chief and, more significantly, the socially dominant social activist movement chiefly responsible for manufacturing his presidency in the 1st place by manufacturing the zeitgeist, often in contravention of the facts, eg, starting with their easily demonstrably false yet nonetheless prevailing narrative of OIF.
They might not always manufacture a social reaction that’s obviously distinct from the aggregate of individual reactions. But they can at least channel it, mute it, redefine it, etc, using the same basic activist manufacturing process applied by Left-mimicking Trump-front alt-Right activists in the GOP primaries, who commandeered the same raw discontent that by 1st dibs and proper rights should have fueled a GOP conservative candidate (eg, Cruz) and manufactured it to fuel the Trump phenomenon, instead.

A drawn-out terror event like Beslan, especially outside a city, will, imo, draw a number of armed citizens, possibly more than the cops. The cops will control them at the scene. They’ll go away, eventually, incandescent with horror and frustrated fury.
If you have any Muslim friends, you might, with apologies, suggest they always have their car gassed up and a bag with spare undies handy.

What really stings here is that solutions to these problems are known. They have been used before, and they work. The question is whether we have the will, and the resolve, to make use of them.

Another example has been used successfully in Israel. Suicide terrorists there were fond of proclaiming: “we love death as you love life”. This was, I presume, intended to terrorize, and to suggest that such terrorists could not be deterred — because how can you deter a man (or woman) already joyously anticipating death? Israel found a way — by instituting a policy of finding the families of such terrorists, evicting them from their homes, and then utterly demolishing those homes. The terrorists HATED that… which caused it to serve as a deterrent.
And that’s the idea. You make it crystal-clear what behavior is unacceptable, and that steps will be taken if this behavior does not stop. Then steps are taken, not for vengeance, not in an ‘eye for an eye’ sense, but with a clear message: “You have hurt us, and have refused to stop hurting us. We will therefore hurt you, and we will aim our actions to hit you where it hurts you, until you stop.”
By the way — our enemy need not be Islam, or Muslims in general. Our enemy is those who would kill infidels in the name of Islam. To that end, we need to be willing to say: “We have no quarrel with Islam. Pray to Allah to your heart’s content, as our Constitution guarantees you the right to do. But Islam does not excuse you from following the laws of the land — and that includes not only laws against murder, but laws against incitement, and all the rest.” We then can — and should, and must — shut down the mosques that incite violence. And when home-grown terrorism happens, as it will, we must find the steps that the terrorists themselves find abhorrent, to use as a deterrent. The two mentioned above might be a good start, but no doubt other approaches can be found.
This country must be willing to say: if we have zero-tolerance in our schools, where a student is punished for merely carrying an aspirin or a pocketknife, then we certainly should have zero-tolerance for the actions of terrorism.
Will such steps be taken? I remain hopeful. But rationally, I’m not expecting much… not from a country that seems to think terrorism can be fought by making all adults take off their shoes at airports.

Tribalism. The Kurd’s focus is upon gaining their independence from Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. At this time that dynamic supersedes any other consideration.
Zhudi Jasser is a good man in deep denial as to the inherent nature of the ideology he embraces.
General el Sisi is a pragmatist. His primary point is that acting upon Allah’s and Muhammad’s dictates is ultimately, suicidal. To my knowledge, he has never claimed that Islam is a religion of peace. He does not dispute the inherent nature of Islam, he simply advocates ignoring Allah’s commands to make war upon the infidel. I doubt if he has strenuous objections to stealth jihad or hijrah jihad.
I explain the majority of Muslims who do not subscribe to Salafi/Wahhabi doctrine by first pointing out that there is NO Salafi/Wahhabi “doctrine”, since all that Salifists and Wahhabists fundamentally preach is that Muslims have a theological obligation to implement ALL of Allah’s commands. Salifists and Wahhabists disagree the way Lutherans and Methodists disagree. Shias and Sunnis, the way that Catholics and Protestants disagree.
ALL ‘radical’ Muslim ‘doctrines’ are simply various forms of insistence that Muslims must fully follow Allah’s will as set down in the Qur’an and demonstrated by Muhammad’s words and actions.

The more faithful a Muslim is to following Allah’s commands, the more devout. The less willing to admit to Islam’s inherent nature, the less honest a Muslim is to both others and themselves.
Yes, sure … focus only on the so-called “bad”. But you never stop to think of all the good things jihadi Muslims have done to improve our lives and social relations and truly make America the place we want it to be.
I remember the bad old days when my father took us to D.C. and walked us right into Bureau headquarters to give us a glimpse of the place and an idea of the environment he had worked in years before.

The Soviet maps of US and European cities have details that aren’t on domestic maps made around the same time, things like the precise width of roads, the load-bearing capacity of bridges, and the types of factories. They’re the kinds of things that would come in handy if you’re planning a tank invasion. Or an occupation. Things that would be virtually impossible to find out without eyes on the ground.
Given the technology of the time, the Soviet maps are incredibly accurate. Even today, the US State Department uses them (among other sources) to place international boundary lines on official government maps.

The closest we’ve come to the correct winning solution in the post-9/11 War on Terror is the Surge+Awakening in OIF. Yet Obama has worked diligently to sabotage the working OIF solution in multiple, compounding damaging ways. Nonetheless, if we mean to win the War on Terror, OIF peace operations are the bar we need to work our way back to. Not necessarily replicating the details, but at least restoring the Bush period, pre-Obama scope and approach to the contest.
Recovering the working solution begins with de-stigmatizing the Iraq intervention for the general public by setting the record straight on the why of the mission.

Right on. I’ve been advocating just that for some time now. Make preaching death to infidels a crime punishable by death. Also pointing out to the followers that the imams and their families never perform martyrdom operations. The Wahhabi/Salafi ideology is anti-human and any rational person should get that.

These surveys never tell you how many of those surveyed are knowledgeable about the Quran or understand all the facets of sharia law. There are various forms of sharia law in different Muslim countries. The forms range from mildly barbaric (maintenance of a fully patriarchal society) to full barbarism (death to apostates, stoning deaths for various offenses, lopping of arms and legs as punishment, etc.). You have to remember there is a lot of illiteracy and ignorance in the Muslim world. Many don’t really know what sharia law is but have been told by imams it would be better than the tyrannical laws of the typical Muslim dictatorships. (The most obvious – Egypt, Qatar, UAE, Iran, Kazakhstan, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan) Part of the Anbar Awakening in Iraq was a rejection of the strict ideology and sharia law of the Wahhabis by the Sunni sheiks in Anbar Province.
The Muslim world was well on its way to reform until Qutb and al Banna, two influential Muslim writers, called for a revival of Wahhabism in the 1950s. Part of their argument was that the Muslim world had fallen on hard times because they had strayed from the true Islam – Wahhabism. That appealed to many Muslims who looked around themselves and saw poverty and no hope of improvement. The other argument was, especially by Qutb, that the West was, by Muslim standards, decadent and evil. That the West did not deserve to be wealthy and powerful. He argued that the Muslim world could regain its former glory by going back to “the old time religion.” Saudi oil money and the West’s ignorance of the implications of fundamentalist Islam has allowed it to spread quite rapidly in the last 66 years.
