Do you plan to watch the SOTU speech tonight? — 33 Comments

  1. I think Mrs. Pelosi is guilty of projection. I have seen more slobbering and drooling from her recently than from Trump.

  2. Nope, not going to watch. Saw enough of Trump during the debates and I doubt if he’s learned much since then. Not being Hillary is a pretty low bar to clear. Our country deserves better.

  3. No. Wish we could go back to the old system where the president sends a written state of the union to congress. Giving a stupid meaningless speech is not required and has not always been the tradition.

  4. we dont have to
just ask these NYU students… (a syster college)

NYU Students Respond to SOTU Before It Is Given

Campus Reform headed to New York University to ask students their opinions of President Trump’s State of the Union. The only problem for them was that the speech would not take place for another seven days…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0ByWdt5iFQ

    Forget pre-crime..

We gots pre-anything where the left tells the future before it happens by thinking it happened before it does.

  5. arfldgrs,

As the old joke about the Soviet Union went ‘the future is known it’s the past that keeps changing’.

This is in many ways the motto of the left today (think climate change).

So those students fit in perfectly. They already know what is going to happen!

  6. I will be maintaining my 40+ year boycott of SOTU speeches tonight. Most likely I will watch an episode of ‘Stranger Things’ and then the third period of the Bruins / Ducks hockey game.

I’m with Griffin – no time in my calendar for stupid meaningless speeches.

  7. Pelosi is so crass, what did she have to say about her to tongue tied Obama? “Uh, uh, uh, well ya ah,ah”
So delighted not to be subjected to THAT anymore .
She is over 80, can’t this harpie get lost.

  8. KLSmith Says: Our country deserves better.

[which is what any nazi would do for the jews… after all, it was FDR that signed the camps over to stalin to keep using!!! it was FDR who sent the jews back on the boat… and more… so a nazi doing that is completely expected, right?]

    there is TONS more.
    but with 90%-95% negative coverage
how would you know to think otherwise?

  9. As the old joke about the Soviet Union went ‘the future is known it’s the past that keeps changing’.

“Communism was a humour-producing machine. Its economic theories and system of repression created inherently funny situations. There were jokes under fascism and the Nazis too, but those systems did not create an absurd, laugh-a-minute reality like communism.”
[even that is the same about the left now here today]

    Close
    🙂

“The future is known–it’s always bright–but the past keeps changing.”

but these are translations so there are quite a few / the shorer they are the more clever they sound

‘The future is bright. The past is unpredictable.’

    suggested not read:
Julius Martov / The Ideology of “Sovietism” (1919)
the soviet State structure — said to be a phase in the progressive abolition of the State itself in its role as an instrument of social oppression — is the historically motivated product of a long evolution, arising in the midst of class antagonisms when these have reached great acuteness under imperialism. It is described as the perfect embodiment of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Appearing at a time when “bourgeois” democracy is said to have lost all content, the soviet régime is pictured as the perfect expression of real democracy.

    hey! thats today
and thats what progressive means under the surface

    Soviet phraseology, or Sovietisms

Most of these distinctions are ultimately traced (directly or indirectly, as a cause-effect chain) to the utopic goal of creating a new society, the ways of the implementation of this goal and what was actually implemented.

Clearly the topic of this article is not limited to the Russian language, since this phraseology permeated all national languages in the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, Russian was the language of “inter-nationality communication” in the Soviet Union

An initial surge of intentional word coinage appeared immediately after the October Revolution. The declared goal of Bolshevik was “to abolish the capitalist state with all its means of oppression“.

so the whole thing now with metoo, and such is just that…soviets abolishing oppression, they even SAY so.

we are that far along, but why would anyone care we are so close… we think four years is enough to do what?

for those that REALLY want to learn
    read or dont read:
LTI — Lingua Tertii Imperii: Notizbuch eines Philologen (1947) is a book by Victor Klemperer, Professor of Literature at the Dresden University of Technology.

you learn a lot about Schleierwé¶rter
    🙂

  10. KL Smith must have been asleep the past year; because I think more positive things happened than in the first year of any Presidency within memory–and I do remember RR.

Most on this forum have acknowledged that Trump is often his own worst enemy in terms of public persona. On the other hand, many of us have learned to look beyond his flaws; or to at least put him into context with the behavior of other powerful or high profile people who tended to get a pass. Obama and Biden uttering the F word into an open mic for instance.

To answer Neo’s question. I don’t know. I really would rather just read the transcript; but, my wife will be glued to the TV, and I will take abuse if I am not there as well. Too old to take abuse. So it will be a question of whether it is more painful to watch the Dimocrat histrionics, or to experience the disapproval of the person closest to me.

  11. By the way, if you want to know the term for what the left does in terms of facts, twisting, etc… and how they know right and wrong and so on…

there is a clear precident, but only if you know details

    Welt
as in Weltanschauung, “intuition/view of the world”

This was quite a rare, specific and cultured term before the Third Reich, but became an everyday word.

It came to designate the instinctive understanding of complex geo-political problems by the Nazis, which allowed them to openly begin invasions, twist facts or violate human rights, in the name of a higher ideal and in accordance to their theory of the world.

    see? we are the same..
    we just dont think so
    like willi said
never let them know these ideas are not theirs

  12. the lucky people bursting into soviets are expected to have passed — at least ideologically — the stage of bourgeois democracy. They are expected to have freed themselves from a number of noxious illusions — parliamentarism, the need for a universal, direct, equal and secret ballot, the need of liberty of the press, etc. Only then can they know the supreme perfection incorporated in the soviet State structure. In practice, however, nations here and there, possessed by the metaphysical negation of the course traced by soviet theory, jump over the prescribed stages. Soviets are the perfect form of the State. They are the magic wand by which all inequalities, all misery, may be suppressed. Having once learned about soviets, who would consent to suffer the yoke of less perfect systems of government? Having once tasted the sweet, who would choose to continue to live, on bitterness? – Julius Martov

    whats not to like?

  13. I’ll be surprised if there are no acts of incivility.

I’d tune in, if I was confident that Trump would unload full bore on the dems and RINOs but I’m not, so I won’t.

  14. Even with my old eyes, I can read a transcript in less time than it takes me to listen to listen to a speech — and I can stop reading to check points that seem dubious to me, as I read.

That kind of checking is especially important when the speeches are made by pathological liars like Trump, or habitual liars like Obama.

(If you are looking for a challenge, you might want to see how many falsehoods you can spot in Trump’s speech, and then compare your list to one by a professional, for example, Gleen Kessler.)

  15. Amadeus (above) nailed it, right out of the box. Projection. ‘Cause you know with all that botox she drools.

  16. the left tells the future before it happens by thinking it happened before it does

Yes, selectively, opportunistically, congruently. Consider the Pro-Choice religious/moral philosophy, where conception precedes choice (not Choice).

  17. Can we live blog here?

I haven’t reviewed comments but I BET somebody will shout “You Lie” to a) provoke Trump b) get back at Republicans for Obama’s lie called out during the SOTU

  18. Will there be an anti-fa parade a la inauguration?

It’s ironic that the left invited, demanded foreign oversight with Obama’s election. When it was, in fact, they, who needed to curb their diversity (i.e. missing the trees for the forest) and violence.

  19. Now that I’ve read the comments.

Look I’ve commented here off and on since 2004. I’m not FOR an orator like Obama because while he was a Marxist to his core and somehow made some people believe he was a centrist – he didn’t fool Neo, myself and millions of others who are conservative, I HONESTLY really wish that Trump was more articulate.

Trump because he is inarticulate digs his own little graves. His Mexican comments were interpreted differently by two groups of people because he said it so inarticulately. His Charlottesville comments as well. And don’t get me started on his war on Twitter against Heidi Klum and Heidi (another one I can’t remember).

I WILL watch the SOTU as I haven’t missed one since my political awakening in 1991. I evolved into a conservative because I heard talk radio and went to the library 3 times a week in 1991 to figure out what the hell.

While I acknowledge the good that Trump has done (see Art’s list), he is assuredly not going to be persuasive tonight because he is simply inarticulate and his speech writers aren’t able to dig his own holes he has created.

If I were his speech writers, I’d grab that shovel and take head on each of the BIG blunders and say – here is the Trump comment and let’s dissect each sentence syntax and show why each one is TRUE and REAL. And anyone who argues otherwise is truly the racist purist idealogue who is uninterested in a healthy America.

Maybe that would be a bad tactic. It seems like Trump is just letting the heat stay on him to deflect

  20. No and not ever to answer the question. Except for theater, I never listen to speeches.

  21. I watched a few of RR’s SOTU and GWB’s 1st SOTU. Otherwise I read the transcript if I am interested. Mostly, I see it as something to avoid.

  22. Thank you Art for a great list of facts. I rarely watch political speeches and will not be watching this one. My husband does watch them. I read the transcripts and the commentary (having heard my husband’s first).

  23. If the Repubs don’t lose the House and Senate in Nov, I might re-evaluate my opinion of Trump. We’ll see.

  24. He s OK. Got a good welcome on entering
Acknowledgment of Scalesi from La. Well received.
He had 2 black couples applauded. as they had each lost a child to MS13. Genius move, dems have to stand for these parents.Trump acknowledged military, dems had to stand for that too. Nothing from the dreamers Nancy brought. Don’t even know where they are !!!

  25. MSN had made me nervous that he d have tomatoes thrown at him. Lol. Not the case. They are coming around everyone appreciates a Padrone. ( trying to use the Spanish word for a strong father figure) I guess that’s how it’s spelled.

  26. I quit watching speeches in real time because, golly (cue Gomer Pyle), everybody sounds good when they talk, even GWB and Obama, because it’s a formal scripted occasion.

I quit watching the “post speech commentary” because I kept throwing things at the TV and shouting, “Did you even watch the same speech I did!?!”

The transcripts are the only way to go, and preferably the full ones, because the commenting pundits twist things both verbally and in print.
